About formats

TM2 (TIM2) is a raster image format developed by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation 2 console, released in Japan on March 4, 2000, as the successor to the original PlayStation's TIM format. TM2 extends the TIM specification to accommodate the PS2's more capable Graphics Synthesizer (GS) GPU, supporting 4-bit indexed (16 colors), 8-bit indexed (256 colors), 16-bit direct color, 24-bit true color, and 32-bit true color with full 8-bit alpha transparency — a significant upgrade over TIM's single-bit semi-transparency flag. The TM2 container includes a file header with a picture count (supporting multiple images in a single file), individual picture headers specifying dimensions, color depth, mipmap count, and CLUT format, the CLUT data, and the image data arranged to match the GS's swizzled memory layout for optimal rendering performance. TM2 files support mipmaps (progressively smaller versions of a texture for distance-based level-of-detail rendering), a feature absent from the original TIM format, reflecting the PS2's ability to handle more sophisticated texture filtering. One advantage is the format's importance in game preservation: thousands of PS2 titles — the best-selling console generation in history — store their texture assets as TM2 files, making the format essential for game modding, texture extraction, HD remaster projects, and academic study of game art history. TM2 files are handled by specialized tools like Rainbow, noesis, and ImageMagick, as well as PlayStation 2 emulator debugging utilities.

AW is the document format of Applix Words, the word processor component of the Applix office suite (later renamed Anyware Office) developed by Applix, Inc. for Unix and Linux workstations. The suite targeted enterprise Unix environments during the 1990s, providing word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, and presentation capabilities on platforms like Solaris, HP-UX, AIX, and Linux where Microsoft Office was unavailable. AW files store formatted text documents with support for character and paragraph styling, page layout, tables, headers and footers, and embedded graphics. The format uses a proprietary binary structure optimized for the Applix application's internal document model. Applix Words gained particular visibility in the Linux community during the late 1990s when it was bundled with several commercial Linux distributions as their default word processor before OpenOffice.org became widely available. One advantage was native Unix platform support — Applix provided professional word processing capabilities on Unix workstations at a time when few commercial alternatives existed. The format's tight integration with other Applix suite components enabled cross-referencing between word processing documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. Applix was acquired by Cognos in 2003, and the office suite was discontinued. AW files are primarily encountered today in archived documents from Unix enterprise environments of the 1990s and early 2000s.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert TM2 to AW?

PlayStation 2 TIM2 images need specialized tools to view. A AW conversion makes those game textures accessible in any modern application.

What programs can open AW?

Applix Words on Linux is the native editor. Conversion is typically the best route since Applix is no longer widely available.

Will I lose image quality converting TM2 to AW?

The conversion keeps your image data intact — AW does not introduce compression artifacts, ensuring the output matches the original closely.

How long does TM2 to AW conversion take?

Most TM2 images convert to AW within seconds. The exact time depends on the resolution and complexity of the source, but it is typically quick.

Does Convertio support batch TM2 to AW conversion?

Batch conversion is supported. Queue as many TM2 files as you need and convert them all to AW in a single run — no repeating steps manually.

Can I use TM2 textures for PS2 modding?

Yes — extract TM2 files from PS2 game data, convert to AW for editing, and convert back when preparing modified game assets.
