About formats

DOCM is a macro-enabled document format for Microsoft Word, introduced with Office 2007 as part of the Office Open XML family. Structurally identical to DOCX — a ZIP archive containing XML parts for document content, styles, themes, and media — DOCM adds the ability to store and execute VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) macro code within the document. The separate .docm extension was a deliberate security measure: users and administrators can distinguish macro-containing files by extension alone, and group policies can restrict macro-enabled formats while allowing standard DOCX documents to open freely. DOCM files store VBA projects in a vbaProject.bin stream within the ZIP package alongside the same XML document content used by DOCX. Macros in Word documents enable automated report generation, custom form processing, document assembly from templates and data sources, and integration with external systems. One advantage is document-level automation — a DOCM file can include routines that populate content from databases, enforce formatting rules, validate fields before submission, or generate derivative documents automatically. The format preserves full compatibility with the OOXML specification, so all standard Word features — styles, tracked changes, comments, embedded media — work identically to DOCX. DOCM is supported by Microsoft Word on Windows and macOS, with macro execution limited to the desktop application.

CSV (Comma-Separated Values) is a plain-text format for storing tabular data, where each line represents a row and fields within a row are separated by commas. The format originated on IBM mainframes in the early 1970s for data interchange between programs and has since become the universal lowest-common-denominator format for structured data exchange. Despite its apparent simplicity, CSV has subtle complexities: fields containing commas, newlines, or quotation marks must be enclosed in double quotes, and embedded double quotes are escaped by doubling them. RFC 4180, published in 2005, codified these conventions but CSV implementations vary widely across software, with differences in delimiters (semicolons in many European locales), line endings, character encodings, and quoting rules. One advantage is absolute universality — every spreadsheet application, database system, programming language, and data analysis tool can read and write CSV, making it the safest format for data exchange between incompatible systems. The plain-text nature is another core strength: CSV files can be opened in any text editor, processed with command-line tools like awk and sed, version-controlled with Git, and streamed line-by-line without loading the entire dataset into memory. CSV remains the default export format for databases, web analytics platforms, scientific instruments, and government open data portals worldwide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert DOCM to CSV?

CSV is the universal data-exchange format — importable into databases, spreadsheets, and scripts without any proprietary dependencies.

What kind of data transfers to CSV?

Tabular content from the DOCM — rows and columns from tables — maps into CSV cells. Non-tabular text may flatten into rows.

What programs read CSV files?

Excel, Google Sheets, LibreOffice Calc, any text editor, Python, R, SQL import tools — virtually every data tool supports CSV.

Are macros included in CSV output?

No. CSV is a plain-text data format with no support for macros, formulas, or formatting — only raw cell values are preserved.

Can I convert multiple DOCM files?

Yes — batch upload several DOCM documents and Convertio will convert each one to CSV in a single operation.

Is there a cost for this?

Basic conversion is free. Premium Convertio plans offer expanded limits for heavier or more frequent conversion needs.
