About formats

DOCM is a macro-enabled document format for Microsoft Word, introduced with Office 2007 as part of the Office Open XML family. Structurally identical to DOCX — a ZIP archive containing XML parts for document content, styles, themes, and media — DOCM adds the ability to store and execute VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) macro code within the document. The separate .docm extension was a deliberate security measure: users and administrators can distinguish macro-containing files by extension alone, and group policies can restrict macro-enabled formats while allowing standard DOCX documents to open freely. DOCM files store VBA projects in a vbaProject.bin stream within the ZIP package alongside the same XML document content used by DOCX. Macros in Word documents enable automated report generation, custom form processing, document assembly from templates and data sources, and integration with external systems. One advantage is document-level automation — a DOCM file can include routines that populate content from databases, enforce formatting rules, validate fields before submission, or generate derivative documents automatically. The format preserves full compatibility with the OOXML specification, so all standard Word features — styles, tracked changes, comments, embedded media — work identically to DOCX. DOCM is supported by Microsoft Word on Windows and macOS, with macro execution limited to the desktop application.

XLSX is the default spreadsheet format for Microsoft Excel since Office 2007, based on the Office Open XML (OOXML) standard published as ECMA-376 and adopted as ISO/IEC 29500. An XLSX file is a ZIP archive containing XML documents that describe workbook structure, sheet data, styles, shared strings, formulas, charts, pivot tables, and relationships between components. Each worksheet is stored as a separate XML part where cells are organized by row and column references with typed values and style indices. The XML foundation enables programmatic spreadsheet creation and manipulation using libraries like openpyxl (Python), Apache POI (Java), and ClosedXML (.NET) without requiring Excel. XLSX dramatically expanded capacity compared to XLS: over 1 million rows and 16,384 columns per sheet, enabling use cases previously impossible in the binary format. One advantage is openness and cross-platform support — the documented OOXML specification enables implementation by LibreOffice Calc, Google Sheets, Apple Numbers, and numerous specialized tools. Built-in ZIP compression is another practical strength: XLSX files are typically 50-75% smaller than equivalent XLS files, and the modular XML structure improves data recovery when files are partially corrupted. The format supports modern Excel features including structured tables, slicers, sparklines, Power Query connections, and real-time co-authoring. XLSX has become the standard format for spreadsheet data interchange across business, scientific, and government domains.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert DOCM to XLSX?

XLSX lets you work with tabular data from DOCM in a modern spreadsheet — sorting, filtering, and formulas become immediately available.

What opens XLSX files?

Microsoft Excel 2007 and later, Google Sheets, LibreOffice Calc, Apple Numbers, and WPS Office all open XLSX without any issues.

Are DOCM macros removed?

Yes. XLSX does not carry VBA macros from the source DOCM file, so the output is a clean, macro-free spreadsheet document.

How are tables mapped to cells?

Convertio extracts tabular structures from the DOCM and places them into corresponding XLSX rows and columns automatically.

Is this conversion free of charge?

Basic DOCM to XLSX conversion is free on Convertio. Premium tiers provide higher limits for frequent or large-file conversions.
