About formats

DOTM is a macro-enabled template format for Microsoft Word, introduced with Office 2007 as part of the Office Open XML family. DOTM combines the template functionality of DOTX — providing reusable styles, page layouts, boilerplate content, and formatting definitions — with the ability to embed VBA macro code that executes in documents created from the template. The format is a ZIP archive containing XML parts for styles, document defaults, and theme definitions, plus a vbaProject.bin stream for the VBA project. This combination enables organizations to distribute not just visual consistency but also functional automation: every document created from a DOTM template inherits both the formatting framework and programmatic capabilities. Common use cases include templates that auto-populate document fields from corporate directories, enforce naming conventions, generate tables of contents, insert dynamic headers with project metadata, or validate document structure before submission. One advantage is embedded workflow automation — a DOTM template can include initialization macros that configure the document environment, register custom ribbon commands, and connect to data sources the moment a new document is created from it. The distinct .dotm extension allows administrators to apply differentiated trust policies for macro-containing templates versus standard DOTX files. DOTM is supported exclusively in Microsoft Word desktop editions where VBA execution is available.

CSV (Comma-Separated Values) is a plain-text format for storing tabular data, where each line represents a row and fields within a row are separated by commas. The format originated on IBM mainframes in the early 1970s for data interchange between programs and has since become the universal lowest-common-denominator format for structured data exchange. Despite its apparent simplicity, CSV has subtle complexities: fields containing commas, newlines, or quotation marks must be enclosed in double quotes, and embedded double quotes are escaped by doubling them. RFC 4180, published in 2005, codified these conventions but CSV implementations vary widely across software, with differences in delimiters (semicolons in many European locales), line endings, character encodings, and quoting rules. One advantage is absolute universality — every spreadsheet application, database system, programming language, and data analysis tool can read and write CSV, making it the safest format for data exchange between incompatible systems. The plain-text nature is another core strength: CSV files can be opened in any text editor, processed with command-line tools like awk and sed, version-controlled with Git, and streamed line-by-line without loading the entire dataset into memory. CSV remains the default export format for databases, web analytics platforms, scientific instruments, and government open data portals worldwide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert DOTM to CSV?

CSV is the most portable data format — ideal for importing tabular content from Word templates into databases and analytics tools.

What programs handle CSV files?

Excel, Google Sheets, LibreOffice Calc, any database import tool, Python, R, and virtually all data processing software read CSV.

What content transfers to CSV?

Tabular data — rows and columns from tables in the DOTM. Rich formatting, images, and macros are stripped down to plain values.

Is the conversion free?

Yes — Convertio converts DOTM to CSV at no cost for standard files. Premium plans are available for larger or bulk conversions.

Can I convert multiple DOTM files?

Upload a batch of templates and each will produce a separate CSV file — efficient for extracting data from many templates at once.

Is my data secure during conversion?

Uploaded files are deleted immediately after conversion, and output files are removed within 24 hours. Your data stays private.
