About formats

DOCM is a macro-enabled document format for Microsoft Word, introduced with Office 2007 as part of the Office Open XML family. Structurally identical to DOCX — a ZIP archive containing XML parts for document content, styles, themes, and media — DOCM adds the ability to store and execute VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) macro code within the document. The separate .docm extension was a deliberate security measure: users and administrators can distinguish macro-containing files by extension alone, and group policies can restrict macro-enabled formats while allowing standard DOCX documents to open freely. DOCM files store VBA projects in a vbaProject.bin stream within the ZIP package alongside the same XML document content used by DOCX. Macros in Word documents enable automated report generation, custom form processing, document assembly from templates and data sources, and integration with external systems. One advantage is document-level automation — a DOCM file can include routines that populate content from databases, enforce formatting rules, validate fields before submission, or generate derivative documents automatically. The format preserves full compatibility with the OOXML specification, so all standard Word features — styles, tracked changes, comments, embedded media — work identically to DOCX. DOCM is supported by Microsoft Word on Windows and macOS, with macro execution limited to the desktop application.

RTF (Rich Text Format) is a document interchange format developed by Microsoft and first published in 1987 with Word 3.0. The format encodes document content and formatting as plain ASCII text using control words (backslash-prefixed commands) and groups (curly-brace-delimited sections) that describe fonts, character formatting, paragraph layout, tables, images, and page setup. Because RTF is fundamentally a text format with no binary components, documents pass cleanly through any text channel — email systems, clipboard operations, and cross-platform transfers — without corruption. Microsoft designed RTF explicitly as a cross-application and cross-platform exchange format, and it achieved broad adoption: virtually every word processor, text editor, and document tool on every operating system has supported RTF reading and writing for decades. One advantage is exceptional cross-platform compatibility — an RTF document created on any application renders with consistent formatting on any other, making it the most reliable format for text exchange between incompatible systems. The text-based structure provides another benefit: RTF files resist corruption, are trivially generated by programs (requiring only string concatenation), and can be debugged by reading the raw markup in a text editor. While RTF lacks modern features like tracked changes and advanced layout controls, and Microsoft declared the specification frozen at version 1.9.1 in 2008, the format persists as a dependable interchange option where DOCX compatibility cannot be assumed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert DOCM to RTF?

RTF is readable by virtually any word processor and strips VBA macros — a safe, lightweight choice for cross-platform document sharing.

What formatting survives in RTF?

Fonts, bold/italic styles, tables, and images carry over. Advanced Word features like tracked changes or SmartArt may simplify.

Which apps open RTF files?

Microsoft Word, WordPad, LibreOffice Writer, Apple TextEdit, Google Docs, and most text editors handle RTF without extra plugins.

Does RTF contain macro code?

No. RTF has no macro support, so converting from DOCM automatically eliminates all embedded VBA code from the document.

Is DOCM to RTF conversion free?

Yes — basic conversion is free on Convertio. Premium options exist for users who need higher throughput or larger file sizes.

How long does the conversion take?

Typically just a few seconds. Convertio processes the file on cloud servers, so speed depends on file size, not your device.
