About formats

PDF (Portable Document Format) was developed by Adobe Systems, co-founded by John Warnock and Charles Geschke, with the first version released on June 15, 1993. Built on a simplified PostScript imaging model, PDF encapsulates complete document descriptions — text with fonts, vector graphics, raster images, and interactive elements — in a self-contained file that renders identically across every platform, device, and printer. The format evolved through multiple versions, culminating in its adoption as international standard ISO 32000-1 in 2008 (PDF 1.7) and ISO 32000-2 in 2017 (PDF 2.0), ensuring long-term vendor independence. PDF supports an extraordinary range of capabilities: digital signatures, form fields, annotations, bookmarks, accessibility tags, encryption, JavaScript, multimedia embedding, 3D content, and archival-specific profiles (PDF/A). One advantage is absolute visual fidelity — a PDF document looks exactly the same whether opened on Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, or Android, printed on any printer, or viewed decades after creation. Universal software support is another core strength: PDF viewers are built into every major operating system and web browser, and the format is read by hundreds of applications worldwide. Specialized ISO profiles like PDF/A (archival), PDF/X (print production), and PDF/UA (accessibility) extend the format's reach into regulated industries. PDF has become the global standard for document exchange in business, government, legal, academic, and publishing contexts.

CSV (Comma-Separated Values) is a plain-text format for storing tabular data, where each line represents a row and fields within a row are separated by commas. The format originated on IBM mainframes in the early 1970s for data interchange between programs and has since become the universal lowest-common-denominator format for structured data exchange. Despite its apparent simplicity, CSV has subtle complexities: fields containing commas, newlines, or quotation marks must be enclosed in double quotes, and embedded double quotes are escaped by doubling them. RFC 4180, published in 2005, codified these conventions but CSV implementations vary widely across software, with differences in delimiters (semicolons in many European locales), line endings, character encodings, and quoting rules. One advantage is absolute universality — every spreadsheet application, database system, programming language, and data analysis tool can read and write CSV, making it the safest format for data exchange between incompatible systems. The plain-text nature is another core strength: CSV files can be opened in any text editor, processed with command-line tools like awk and sed, version-controlled with Git, and streamed line-by-line without loading the entire dataset into memory. CSV remains the default export format for databases, web analytics platforms, scientific instruments, and government open data portals worldwide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert PDF to CSV?

CSV lets you work with tabular PDF data in spreadsheets and databases — sort, filter, analyze, and import without manual retyping.

What programs open CSV?

Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, LibreOffice Calc, Apple Numbers, and virtually any data analysis tool or programming language.

Can it extract complex tables?

Convertio extracts tabular content from PDF pages. Very complex or merged-cell layouts may require some cleanup after extraction.

Will non-table text be included?

The conversion focuses on extractable structured content. Paragraph text outside of tables may appear as single-column rows.

Is there a page limit for free use?

You can convert PDF to CSV for free on Convertio. Premium plans unlock additional capacity for larger or more frequent jobs.
