About formats

DOCM is a macro-enabled document format for Microsoft Word, introduced with Office 2007 as part of the Office Open XML family. Structurally identical to DOCX — a ZIP archive containing XML parts for document content, styles, themes, and media — DOCM adds the ability to store and execute VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) macro code within the document. The separate .docm extension was a deliberate security measure: users and administrators can distinguish macro-containing files by extension alone, and group policies can restrict macro-enabled formats while allowing standard DOCX documents to open freely. DOCM files store VBA projects in a vbaProject.bin stream within the ZIP package alongside the same XML document content used by DOCX. Macros in Word documents enable automated report generation, custom form processing, document assembly from templates and data sources, and integration with external systems. One advantage is document-level automation — a DOCM file can include routines that populate content from databases, enforce formatting rules, validate fields before submission, or generate derivative documents automatically. The format preserves full compatibility with the OOXML specification, so all standard Word features — styles, tracked changes, comments, embedded media — work identically to DOCX. DOCM is supported by Microsoft Word on Windows and macOS, with macro execution limited to the desktop application.

ODT (OpenDocument Text) is the word processing format defined by the OpenDocument Format (ODF) standard, developed by the OASIS technical committee and first published as ODF 1.0 on May 1, 2005, later adopted as international standard ISO/IEC 26300. An ODT file is a ZIP archive containing XML documents that describe text content, formatting styles, metadata, and settings using a vendor-neutral, royalty-free specification. The document body resides in content.xml with styling rules in styles.xml, while embedded images, fonts, and other resources are stored alongside in the package. The format supports rich word processing features including paragraph and character styles, tables, footnotes, tracked changes, table of contents generation, bibliography management, mail merge fields, and embedded vector and raster graphics. ODT serves as the native format for LibreOffice Writer, Apache OpenOffice Writer, and Calligra Words, and can be imported by Microsoft Word, Google Docs, and other commercial tools. One advantage is vendor independence — ODT is governed by an open standard rather than a single company, ensuring long-term document accessibility free from proprietary lock-in. This makes ODT particularly important for government agencies, educational institutions, and organizations with archival mandates. The XML-based architecture provides another strength, enabling programmatic document generation and processing using standard tools in any programming language.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert DOCM to ODT?

ODT is an open standard supported by LibreOffice, Google Docs, and others — great when you want vendor-neutral documents without macros.

Does ODT preserve DOCM formatting?

Most text styles, images, headers, and tables transfer well. Complex Word-specific features may need minor manual adjustments in ODT.

What applications open ODT?

LibreOffice Writer, Apache OpenOffice, Google Docs, Microsoft Word 2007+, and Calligra Words all support the ODT format natively.

Are macros removed in the process?

Yes — ODT does not carry over VBA macros from DOCM, so the resulting file is clean and free of any embedded automation code.

Is this conversion free?

Basic DOCM to ODT conversion is free on Convertio. Upgraded plans provide more capacity for frequent or heavy-duty usage.

Do I need LibreOffice installed?

No. The conversion runs entirely on Convertio servers in your browser — no local software is required at any stage.
