Broader Reach

SOU is a niche legacy format with minimal support. Converting to SMP brings your audio into a format recognized by Turtle Beach SampleVision and many other tools.

Universal Access

Convert SOU to SMP from any device — desktop, laptop, tablet, or phone. All you need is a browser and internet connection.

Fast Cloud Engine

Conversion runs on our servers, not your device — so even large SOU recordings transform to SMP without slowing your machine.

About formats

SOU is a raw audio format designation that functions as an alias for unsigned 8-bit PCM data (u8) in the SoX audio processing framework. Files with the .sou extension contain headerless, uncompressed audio samples stored as unsigned 8-bit integers — each byte represents a single amplitude value from 0 to 255, with 128 as the silence midpoint. Because there is no header, playback parameters such as sample rate and channel count must be specified externally. The default assumption is typically mono at 8000 Hz, though the data can represent any rate the recording hardware supported. The u8 encoding that SOU aliases is one of the simplest possible digital audio representations, predating structured audio containers like WAV and AIFF. Raw unsigned PCM was commonly produced by early sound cards and digitizers in the late 1980s and early 1990s, when storage constraints and limited processing power made headerless formats a practical choice. One advantage is absolute simplicity: SOU files can be read by any program capable of basic file I/O, with no parsing of container structures or metadata decoding required — useful for embedded systems, hardware diagnostics, and educational contexts where audio fundamentals are being explored. The format's minimal overhead also means that conversion to any modern container is lossless and instantaneous, since the raw PCM samples can be wrapped in a WAV or AIFF header without any transcoding.

SMP is the native file format of SampleVision, a sample editing application developed by Turtle Beach Systems around 1990. SampleVision was among the first PC-based visual sample editors, letting musicians view waveforms on screen and perform cut, copy, paste, and loop-point editing — capabilities previously limited to expensive dedicated hardware samplers. The SMP format stores 16-bit mono PCM audio along with sampling-specific metadata: loop start and end points, sustain loops, release loops, and MIDI root note assignments. This made SMP files directly useful for creating and exchanging patches between hardware samplers via MIDI Sample Dump Standard (SDS) transfers, which SampleVision automated through its interface. A primary advantage was bridging the PC world with professional sampling hardware from Akai, E-mu, Ensoniq, and Roland — devices that had tiny screens and minimal editing tools. The format also supported common sample rates (22050, 44100 Hz) and brief text descriptions alongside audio data. Though Turtle Beach pivoted to gaming peripherals and SampleVision was discontinued, SMP files persist in vintage sample library archives and can be converted using SoX.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes SMP a better choice than SOU?

SOU is a legacy raw audio format without any container structure. Converting to SMP gives you sampler-oriented audio format.

What can I use to play SMP?

You can open SMP with Turtle Beach SampleVision, SoX, and legacy audio samplers.

Does SOU to SMP conversion affect quality?

SMP preserves audio data faithfully. Since SOU already has limited fidelity, the SMP output matches the original quality exactly.

Can I do this conversion from my phone?

Yes. The online converter is platform-independent — use it from any computer, tablet, or smartphone with a web browser.

Are there limits on SOU to SMP conversion?

Standard conversions work without restrictions for typical use. Premium plans provide additional speed and capacity for large workloads.

Is registration needed for this conversion?

No account is needed for standard conversions. Simply upload your SOU recording, choose SMP, and download the result.
