About formats

FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) delivers mathematically perfect audio reproduction at roughly half the size of an uncompressed WAV file. Maintained by the Xiph.Org Foundation and released in 2001, it quickly became the de facto open standard for lossless music archival. The encoder applies linear prediction to model each audio block, then codes the residual through Rice partitioning — exploiting the statistical distribution of prediction errors for strong compression without discarding data. Bit depths up to 32 and sample rates up to 655 kHz are supported, exceeding the requirements of high-resolution recordings. Hardware support is extensive: smartphones, car stereos, Blu-ray players, and virtually every desktop media application decode FLAC natively. Streaming services such as Tidal and Amazon Music use FLAC for lossless tiers, underscoring industry trust in the codec. Three standout benefits make FLAC compelling. First, complete bit-for-bit restoration of the original signal upon decoding. Second, embedded metadata via Vorbis comments and album art keeps libraries organized without sidecar files. Third, open-source licensing means no patents or royalties, removing legal friction for developers and hardware vendors.

SMP is the native file format of SampleVision, a sample editing application developed by Turtle Beach Systems around 1990. SampleVision was among the first PC-based visual sample editors, letting musicians view waveforms on screen and perform cut, copy, paste, and loop-point editing — capabilities previously limited to expensive dedicated hardware samplers. The SMP format stores 16-bit mono PCM audio along with sampling-specific metadata: loop start and end points, sustain loops, release loops, and MIDI root note assignments. This made SMP files directly useful for creating and exchanging patches between hardware samplers via MIDI Sample Dump Standard (SDS) transfers, which SampleVision automated through its interface. A primary advantage was bridging the PC world with professional sampling hardware from Akai, E-mu, Ensoniq, and Roland — devices that had tiny screens and minimal editing tools. The format also supported common sample rates (22050, 44100 Hz) and brief text descriptions alongside audio data. Though Turtle Beach pivoted to gaming peripherals and SampleVision was discontinued, SMP files persist in vintage sample library archives and can be converted using SoX.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert FLAC to SMP?

SMP is the native format for Turtle Beach SampleVision. Lossless FLAC as the source guarantees every nuance of the original recording survives the conversion process.

What programs open SMP files?

Turtle Beach SampleVision loads SMP directly, and SoX can read and write the format on the command line. Some vintage sampler emulators also import SMP for retro sound design.

Is SMP used in modern music production?

SMP is a niche format today, valued mainly by vintage sampler collectors and retro music producers who work with original Turtle Beach hardware or authentic period sounds.

Does starting from FLAC make better SMP samples?

Yes — FLAC is lossless, so the encoder works from a perfect source. Lossy inputs like MP3 would embed compression artifacts permanently into the SMP sample data.

Can I batch convert FLAC files to SMP?

Absolutely — upload multiple FLAC recordings and convertio.tools will encode each one to SMP simultaneously, which is ideal for building vintage sample libraries efficiently.
