About formats

MOV is a multimedia container format developed by Apple Inc. and introduced in December 1991 with the launch of the QuickTime multimedia framework. As the native format of QuickTime, MOV pioneered many concepts that later influenced the ISO base media file format (MPEG-4 Part 12) and its derivatives, including MP4. The container uses a hierarchical atom (or box) structure where each atom holds specific types of data — from video and audio tracks to metadata, text, and timecode information. MOV supports an extremely broad range of codecs including H.264, HEVC, ProRes, Apple Intermediate Codec, AAC, and PCM, among many others. This codec flexibility, combined with features like multiple track support, reference movies, and edit lists, has made MOV a staple of professional video production. The ProRes codec from Apple, commonly delivered in MOV containers, is an industry standard for post-production and broadcast finishing. The format handles both compressed delivery-quality content and high-bit-rate production-quality footage with equal capability. Precise timecode and metadata handling make MOV particularly valued in workflows requiring frame-accurate editing and reliable exchange between production tools. MOV is natively supported across all Apple platforms and widely recognized by professional editing software on all operating systems, maintaining its relevance across decades of evolving video technology.

SMP is the native file format of SampleVision, a sample editing application developed by Turtle Beach Systems around 1990. SampleVision was among the first PC-based visual sample editors, letting musicians view waveforms on screen and perform cut, copy, paste, and loop-point editing — capabilities previously limited to expensive dedicated hardware samplers. The SMP format stores 16-bit mono PCM audio along with sampling-specific metadata: loop start and end points, sustain loops, release loops, and MIDI root note assignments. This made SMP files directly useful for creating and exchanging patches between hardware samplers via MIDI Sample Dump Standard (SDS) transfers, which SampleVision automated through its interface. A primary advantage was bridging the PC world with professional sampling hardware from Akai, E-mu, Ensoniq, and Roland — devices that had tiny screens and minimal editing tools. The format also supported common sample rates (22050, 44100 Hz) and brief text descriptions alongside audio data. Though Turtle Beach pivoted to gaming peripherals and SampleVision was discontinued, SMP files persist in vintage sample library archives and can be converted using SoX.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert MOV to SMP?

SMP is the Turtle Beach SampleVision format for MIDI samplers. MOV audio from QuickTime video becomes unique raw material for instrument patches.

What equipment uses SMP?

SMP files work with Turtle Beach SampleVision software and compatible MIDI samplers. The format bridges computer audio with hardware sampling.

Does MOV provide quality audio?

MOV typically carries high-quality AAC or PCM audio. This makes QuickTime video an excellent source for capturing detailed sampler content.

Can SMP store any sample rate?

SampleVision accepts all sample rates, though specific MIDI samplers may have restrictions. Check your target hardware for compatibility.

Is batch conversion possible?

Yes — upload multiple MOV files and convert them all to SMP. Build a sample library from video audio in one batch operation.
