About formats

MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14) is the most widely used multimedia container format in the world, standardized by the Moving Picture Experts Group as part of the MPEG-4 specification in 2003. Built on the ISO base media file format (MPEG-4 Part 12), which itself drew from the Apple QuickTime container, MP4 uses a hierarchical atom/box structure that can encapsulate virtually any type of media data. The container most commonly packages H.264 or H.265 video with AAC audio, though it also supports a wide range of alternative codecs including AV1, VP9, MPEG-4 Visual, AC-3, and ALAC. The design supports advanced features such as streaming hints for progressive download and adaptive streaming, chapter markers, multiple audio and subtitle tracks, metadata tags, and embedded thumbnail images. A standardized structure and broad codec support have made MP4 the default choice for online video platforms, mobile devices, digital cameras, and operating system media libraries. HTML5 video with H.264 in MP4 is supported by every major web browser, establishing the combination as the universal baseline for web video delivery. Efficient packaging overhead, combined with the compression capabilities of modern codecs it carries, enables high-quality video distribution at practical file sizes across bandwidth-constrained networks and storage-limited devices.

SMP is the native file format of SampleVision, a sample editing application developed by Turtle Beach Systems around 1990. SampleVision was among the first PC-based visual sample editors, letting musicians view waveforms on screen and perform cut, copy, paste, and loop-point editing — capabilities previously limited to expensive dedicated hardware samplers. The SMP format stores 16-bit mono PCM audio along with sampling-specific metadata: loop start and end points, sustain loops, release loops, and MIDI root note assignments. This made SMP files directly useful for creating and exchanging patches between hardware samplers via MIDI Sample Dump Standard (SDS) transfers, which SampleVision automated through its interface. A primary advantage was bridging the PC world with professional sampling hardware from Akai, E-mu, Ensoniq, and Roland — devices that had tiny screens and minimal editing tools. The format also supported common sample rates (22050, 44100 Hz) and brief text descriptions alongside audio data. Though Turtle Beach pivoted to gaming peripherals and SampleVision was discontinued, SMP files persist in vintage sample library archives and can be converted using SoX.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert MP4 to SMP?

SMP is the Turtle Beach SampleVision sample format — used for loading audio samples into compatible synthesizers and sampling hardware.

What opens SMP files?

SampleVision software, SoX, and some sampling hardware load SMP files natively. It is a specialized format for audio sampling workflows.

Is SMP widely used?

SMP is a niche format from the sampling hardware era. It remains relevant for users of Turtle Beach equipment and vintage samplers.

Can I batch convert?

Upload several MP4 files at once. Each audio track is extracted to a separate SMP file, all processed in parallel.

What quality does SMP support?

SMP supports standard PCM audio at various sample rates and bit depths — matching the capabilities of the target sampling hardware.

Does conversion remove the video?

Yes. Only the audio portion of your MP4 is kept. The video is discarded, producing a dedicated SMP audio sample file.
