About formats

MOBI is an ebook format originally developed by Mobipocket SA, a French company founded in 2000 that was later acquired by Amazon in 2005. The format builds on the PalmDOC/PDB container structure, adding support for HTML-based content markup, embedded images, a DRM layer, and a JavaScript subset for limited interactivity. MOBI files use a record-based database architecture inherited from Palm OS, with a header structure containing metadata like title, author, publisher, and language followed by compressed HTML content records. The format became the foundation of Amazon's early Kindle ecosystem — the original AZW format used on first-generation Kindles was essentially MOBI with Amazon's own DRM wrapper. MOBI supports reflowable text with basic formatting including bold, italic, headings, lists, and tables, as well as internal hyperlinks and a built-in table of contents. One advantage is broad device compatibility: MOBI files are recognized by Kindle devices and apps spanning over a decade of hardware, as well as numerous third-party readers on desktop and mobile platforms. The format's lightweight structure is another strength — even long novels produce compact files that load quickly on modest hardware. While Amazon has since moved to the more capable AZW3/KF8 format for new publishing, MOBI remains widely circulated in existing ebook libraries and continues to be produced by conversion tools like Calibre for maximum Kindle compatibility.

WBMP (Wireless Bitmap) is a monochrome (1-bit, black and white) image format defined as part of the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) specification, developed by the WAP Forum (later consolidated into the Open Mobile Alliance) around 1998. The format was designed for the extremely constrained mobile devices of the late 1990s and early 2000s — phones with small monochrome screens, minimal processing power, and narrow bandwidth GSM data connections. WBMP uses the simplest possible encoding: a type identifier byte (always 0 for the only defined type), width and height encoded as multi-byte integers using a variable-length scheme, and the raw pixel data where each bit represents one pixel (0 for white, 1 for black) packed eight per byte. There is no compression, no metadata, and no color — the format is purely a minimal container for delivering small monochrome graphics to WAP-era mobile browsers. One advantage was extreme efficiency on constrained devices — WBMP images could be decoded with virtually zero CPU overhead and minimal memory, critical on early mobile hardware running at single-digit megahertz clock speeds. The tiny file sizes are another strength: a typical WBMP icon occupied just a few hundred bytes, practical for transfer over 9.6 kbps GSM data channels. While the WAP ecosystem has been entirely superseded by modern mobile web browsers capable of rendering full-color JPEG, PNG, and WebP images, WBMP files remain encountered in archived mobile content from that transitional era.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert MOBI to WBMP?

WBMP is a monochrome bitmap format designed for WAP displays and basic mobile screens — useful for very low-bandwidth or legacy mobile applications.

How do I open a WBMP file?

IrfanView, GIMP, XnView, and ImageMagick all handle WBMP files. Some older mobile browsers also display WBMP images natively.

Is WBMP color or grayscale?

WBMP is strictly black-and-white (1-bit depth). Ebook pages are rendered as high-contrast monochrome bitmaps without any grayscale tones.

When would I actually need WBMP format?

WBMP is needed for legacy WAP content, retro mobile development, or scenarios demanding the absolute smallest image file sizes possible.

Are the output files very small?

Yes — 1-bit monochrome images are extremely compact. WBMP files from MOBI pages will be far smaller than any standard image format.
