About formats

EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) is a vector file format developed by Adobe Systems in collaboration with Aldus Corporation, first published in 1987. Built on Adobe's PostScript page description language, EPS wraps a self-contained PostScript program describing a single page of graphics — including vector paths, text, and embedded raster images — within a structured comment framework that provides bounding box coordinates and optional preview thumbnails. The encapsulation allows an EPS file to be placed into another document as a contained graphic element without interfering with the host document's PostScript code. For decades, EPS served as the universal exchange format in professional publishing, prepress, and print production, accepted by virtually every design, illustration, and page layout application across platforms. One key advantage is print-industry reliability — because EPS contains device-independent PostScript instructions, output is consistent across different RIPs, imagesetters, and printing presses. The format's cross-application compatibility is another strength: an EPS file created in Illustrator, CorelDRAW, or Inkscape can be placed in QuarkXPress, InDesign, or Word without requiring the originating application. While PDF has largely superseded EPS for modern workflows, the format remains widely used in stock illustration libraries, legacy publishing pipelines, and any context requiring a proven, universally supported vector exchange format.

WBMP (Wireless Bitmap) is a monochrome (1-bit, black and white) image format defined as part of the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) specification, developed by the WAP Forum (later consolidated into the Open Mobile Alliance) around 1998. The format was designed for the extremely constrained mobile devices of the late 1990s and early 2000s — phones with small monochrome screens, minimal processing power, and narrow bandwidth GSM data connections. WBMP uses the simplest possible encoding: a type identifier byte (always 0 for the only defined type), width and height encoded as multi-byte integers using a variable-length scheme, and the raw pixel data where each bit represents one pixel (0 for white, 1 for black) packed eight per byte. There is no compression, no metadata, and no color — the format is purely a minimal container for delivering small monochrome graphics to WAP-era mobile browsers. One advantage was extreme efficiency on constrained devices — WBMP images could be decoded with virtually zero CPU overhead and minimal memory, critical on early mobile hardware running at single-digit megahertz clock speeds. The tiny file sizes are another strength: a typical WBMP icon occupied just a few hundred bytes, practical for transfer over 9.6 kbps GSM data channels. While the WAP ecosystem has been entirely superseded by modern mobile web browsers capable of rendering full-color JPEG, PNG, and WebP images, WBMP files remain encountered in archived mobile content from that transitional era.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert EPS to WBMP?

WBMP is a monochrome format designed for mobile and wireless devices. Converting EPS to WBMP creates minimal-footprint images for embedded use.

What displays WBMP files?

WAP browsers, embedded systems, and image viewers like IrfanView and XnView can display WBMP monochrome images.

Is WBMP only black and white?

Yes — WBMP stores 1-bit monochrome data. Each pixel is either black or white, making files extremely compact.

Is EPS to WBMP conversion free?

Convertio offers free EPS to WBMP conversion. Premium plans provide extended limits for batch processing and larger files.

When would I use WBMP over PNG?

WBMP is best for extreme size constraints — WAP pages, embedded displays, and applications where only monochrome images are needed.
