About formats

MOBI is an ebook format originally developed by Mobipocket SA, a French company founded in 2000 that was later acquired by Amazon in 2005. The format builds on the PalmDOC/PDB container structure, adding support for HTML-based content markup, embedded images, a DRM layer, and a JavaScript subset for limited interactivity. MOBI files use a record-based database architecture inherited from Palm OS, with a header structure containing metadata like title, author, publisher, and language followed by compressed HTML content records. The format became the foundation of Amazon's early Kindle ecosystem — the original AZW format used on first-generation Kindles was essentially MOBI with Amazon's own DRM wrapper. MOBI supports reflowable text with basic formatting including bold, italic, headings, lists, and tables, as well as internal hyperlinks and a built-in table of contents. One advantage is broad device compatibility: MOBI files are recognized by Kindle devices and apps spanning over a decade of hardware, as well as numerous third-party readers on desktop and mobile platforms. The format's lightweight structure is another strength — even long novels produce compact files that load quickly on modest hardware. While Amazon has since moved to the more capable AZW3/KF8 format for new publishing, MOBI remains widely circulated in existing ebook libraries and continues to be produced by conversion tools like Calibre for maximum Kindle compatibility.

EXR is a high-dynamic-range raster image format developed by Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) internally since 1999 and publicly released as open-source software in January 2003. OpenEXR was created to meet the demanding requirements of feature film visual effects compositing, where scenes routinely contain extreme brightness ranges — from deep shadows to specular highlights on water, metal, or light sources — that exceed the precision of 8-bit or 16-bit integer formats. EXR stores pixel data in 16-bit floating-point (half) or 32-bit floating-point per channel, providing over 30 stops of dynamic range with smooth precision across the entire luminance spectrum. The format supports an arbitrary number of channels (not just RGBA), tiled and scanline storage, multiple compression methods (lossless ZIP, lossy B44 and DWAA/DWAB for preview quality), multi-part files containing multiple views or layers, and deep pixel data where each pixel stores multiple depth-sorted samples for volumetric effects. One advantage is compositing fidelity: the floating-point precision means that color grading, exposure adjustments, lighting changes, and multi-layer compositing operations produce mathematically correct results without the banding, clipping, or quantization artifacts inherent in integer formats. EXR's adoption as the VFX industry standard is another core strength — it is the default interchange format for Foundry Nuke, Autodesk Flame, Blackmagic Fusion, Adobe After Effects, and every major 3D renderer, and its open-source C++ library is embedded in hundreds of production tools.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert MOBI to EXR?

EXR supports high dynamic range and 32-bit floating-point color — useful for integrating ebook page images into VFX compositing or HDR workflows.

How do I open an EXR file?

Adobe Photoshop, Nuke, Blender, GIMP (with plugin), and DJV Imaging all open EXR files — it is the standard format in VFX production.

Is EXR necessary for ebook page images?

For most uses, no. EXR is overkill for ebook pages — but if your pipeline requires HDR input or 32-bit precision, it is the right choice.

What industries use EXR?

Film, television, video game development, and architectural visualization rely on EXR for its lossless HDR capabilities and wide color gamut.

Are EXR files large?

EXR files are larger than standard images due to floating-point precision. However, the format supports efficient lossless compression options.
