Grayscale Rendering

MOBI ebook pages become PGM grayscale images — the Netpbm format optimized for image analysis, OCR input, and processing workflows.

Clean Tonal Range

PGM captures 256 levels of gray, producing smooth page renders where text and imagery are represented with proper tonal fidelity.

Server-Processed

The MOBI to PGM conversion runs entirely on Convertio servers — no Netpbm toolkit installation needed on your own machine.

About formats

MOBI is an ebook format originally developed by Mobipocket SA, a French company founded in 2000 that was later acquired by Amazon in 2005. The format builds on the PalmDOC/PDB container structure, adding support for HTML-based content markup, embedded images, a DRM layer, and a JavaScript subset for limited interactivity. MOBI files use a record-based database architecture inherited from Palm OS, with a header structure containing metadata like title, author, publisher, and language followed by compressed HTML content records. The format became the foundation of Amazon's early Kindle ecosystem — the original AZW format used on first-generation Kindles was essentially MOBI with Amazon's own DRM wrapper. MOBI supports reflowable text with basic formatting including bold, italic, headings, lists, and tables, as well as internal hyperlinks and a built-in table of contents. One advantage is broad device compatibility: MOBI files are recognized by Kindle devices and apps spanning over a decade of hardware, as well as numerous third-party readers on desktop and mobile platforms. The format's lightweight structure is another strength — even long novels produce compact files that load quickly on modest hardware. While Amazon has since moved to the more capable AZW3/KF8 format for new publishing, MOBI remains widely circulated in existing ebook libraries and continues to be produced by conversion tools like Calibre for maximum Kindle compatibility.

PGM (Portable Graymap) is the grayscale member of the Netpbm image format family, created by Jef Poskanzer in 1988 as part of the Pbmplus toolkit for Unix systems. PGM stores single-channel intensity images where each pixel holds a gray value from 0 (black) to a user-specified maximum (typically 255 for 8-bit or 65535 for 16-bit). The format exists in ASCII (magic number P2), where pixel values are written as decimal text numbers separated by whitespace, and binary (magic number P5), where values are stored as raw bytes. Both variants begin with a header specifying the magic number, width, height, and maximum gray value. PGM was designed as the grayscale intermediate in Netpbm's convert-process-convert pipeline philosophy: source images from any format are converted to PGM, processed using Netpbm's extensive command-line tool library, then converted to the target format. One advantage is format transparency — the ASCII variant makes image data directly readable by humans and trivially processable by text tools like awk and grep, invaluable for debugging and education. The scientific and computer vision community's adoption is another strength: PGM's straightforward single-channel representation makes it a natural format for image analysis algorithms, and many academic papers and course materials use PGM examples. The format is supported by ImageMagick, GIMP, and countless image processing libraries, and remains standard input for many research tools and benchmarks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert MOBI to PGM?

PGM captures grayscale detail — ideal for image processing research, OCR preprocessing, or creating e-ink-style renders of MOBI ebook pages.

How do I open a PGM file?

GIMP, IrfanView, XnView, and Linux viewers like Eye of GNOME open PGM. Netpbm command-line tools also process PGM files directly.

What is the difference between PBM and PGM?

PBM stores only black and white (1-bit). PGM adds grayscale depth — typically 8-bit with 256 shades of gray for smoother page representation.

Can PGM be used for OCR?

Yes — grayscale PGM images are commonly used as input for OCR engines and text recognition research, providing good contrast for analysis.

Is PGM suitable for viewing ebook content?

PGM works for viewing but is mainly a processing format. For everyday reading, convert MOBI to PDF or EPUB instead.
