About formats

MOBI is an ebook format originally developed by Mobipocket SA, a French company founded in 2000 that was later acquired by Amazon in 2005. The format builds on the PalmDOC/PDB container structure, adding support for HTML-based content markup, embedded images, a DRM layer, and a JavaScript subset for limited interactivity. MOBI files use a record-based database architecture inherited from Palm OS, with a header structure containing metadata like title, author, publisher, and language followed by compressed HTML content records. The format became the foundation of Amazon's early Kindle ecosystem — the original AZW format used on first-generation Kindles was essentially MOBI with Amazon's own DRM wrapper. MOBI supports reflowable text with basic formatting including bold, italic, headings, lists, and tables, as well as internal hyperlinks and a built-in table of contents. One advantage is broad device compatibility: MOBI files are recognized by Kindle devices and apps spanning over a decade of hardware, as well as numerous third-party readers on desktop and mobile platforms. The format's lightweight structure is another strength — even long novels produce compact files that load quickly on modest hardware. While Amazon has since moved to the more capable AZW3/KF8 format for new publishing, MOBI remains widely circulated in existing ebook libraries and continues to be produced by conversion tools like Calibre for maximum Kindle compatibility.

HEIF (High Efficiency Image File Format) is a container format for images and image sequences standardized by the Moving Picture Experts Group as ISO/IEC 23008-12, first published in 2015. HEIF is built on the ISO Base Media File Format (ISOBMFF, the same container used for MP4 video), providing a flexible structure that can hold single images, image collections, image sequences (like animations or bursts), and derived images with non-destructive editing operations. The container is codec-agnostic — while the most common implementation pairs HEIF with HEVC/H.265 compression (branded as HEIC by Apple), the standard also accommodates AV1 compression (creating the AVIF variant), H.266/VVC, and other future codecs. HEIF supports features that JPEG lacks: 10-bit and 12-bit color depth, wide color gamuts (Display P3, BT.2020), lossless compression, alpha transparency, depth maps, thumbnail images, and Exif/XMP metadata — all within a single file. Auxiliary image items can store computational photography data like depth maps, HDR gain maps, and semantic segmentation masks. One advantage is the format's future-proof architecture: by separating the container from the codec, HEIF can adopt newer, more efficient compression technologies without changing the file structure, metadata handling, or application-level APIs. The substantial compression improvement over JPEG is another core strength — HEVC-based HEIF typically achieves 40-50% file size reduction compared to JPEG at the same visual quality, beneficial for storage and bandwidth. HEIF is supported by Apple's ecosystem (iOS, macOS), Windows 10/11, Android 10+, GIMP, ImageMagick, and Adobe products.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert MOBI to HEIF?

HEIF delivers next-generation image compression — storing ebook page renders in less space than JPEG while keeping significantly better visual quality.

What software opens HEIF files?

macOS Preview, Windows Photos (with HEIF extension), GIMP 2.10+, Adobe Lightroom, and most modern smartphone gallery apps support HEIF natively.

How is HEIF different from HEIC?

HEIC is Apple-specific branding for HEIF with HEVC compression. HEIF is the broader ISO standard — both share the same underlying technology.

Can I convert multiple MOBI files to HEIF at once?

Batch conversion is supported. Upload several MOBI files simultaneously and each one converts to HEIF independently in a single session.

Is MOBI to HEIF conversion free?

Completely free on Convertio. Upload your MOBI ebook, convert to HEIF, and download — no hidden charges. Premium adds extra benefits.
