Next-Gen Compression

HEIF provides superior compression over traditional formats. Converting WMF to HEIF creates compact files without quality compromise.

Secure Processing

WMF files are deleted after conversion. HEIF output is automatically removed from servers within 24 hours.

Cloud Conversion

All processing happens on Convertio servers — your device remains free while the WMF is encoded to HEIF.

About formats

WMF (Windows Metafile) is a vector graphics format created by Microsoft, introduced with Windows 3.0 in May 1990 as the platform's native format for recording and replaying graphical operations. A WMF file captures a sequence of GDI (Graphics Device Interface) drawing commands — lines, rectangles, ellipses, polygons, text, and bitmap blits — in the order they were issued, serializing screen or printer output into a replayable file. The format uses a 16-bit coordinate space and organizes records as a linear stream of function calls with their parameters, preceded by a header specifying the bounding rectangle and resolution. WMF became deeply integrated into the Windows ecosystem as the default format for clip art collections, Office document graphics, and clipboard vector interchange during the 1990s — Microsoft Office shipped with thousands of WMF clip art images that defined a visual era of desktop publishing. One advantage is pervasive compatibility: virtually every Windows application from the past three decades can render WMF content, making it one of the most widely supported vector formats in existence. The lightweight recording model is another strength — WMF files are compact and render quickly because they replay native system drawing calls rather than interpreting a complex graphics language. While 16-bit limitations and lack of transparency and Bezier curves led Microsoft to develop EMF as a 32-bit replacement, WMF files remain ubiquitous in legacy documents and across current Windows software.

HEIF (High Efficiency Image File Format) is a container format for images and image sequences standardized by the Moving Picture Experts Group as ISO/IEC 23008-12, first published in 2015. HEIF is built on the ISO Base Media File Format (ISOBMFF, the same container used for MP4 video), providing a flexible structure that can hold single images, image collections, image sequences (like animations or bursts), and derived images with non-destructive editing operations. The container is codec-agnostic — while the most common implementation pairs HEIF with HEVC/H.265 compression (branded as HEIC by Apple), the standard also accommodates AV1 compression (creating the AVIF variant), H.266/VVC, and other future codecs. HEIF supports features that JPEG lacks: 10-bit and 12-bit color depth, wide color gamuts (Display P3, BT.2020), lossless compression, alpha transparency, depth maps, thumbnail images, and Exif/XMP metadata — all within a single file. Auxiliary image items can store computational photography data like depth maps, HDR gain maps, and semantic segmentation masks. One advantage is the format's future-proof architecture: by separating the container from the codec, HEIF can adopt newer, more efficient compression technologies without changing the file structure, metadata handling, or application-level APIs. The substantial compression improvement over JPEG is another core strength — HEVC-based HEIF typically achieves 40-50% file size reduction compared to JPEG at the same visual quality, beneficial for storage and bandwidth. HEIF is supported by Apple's ecosystem (iOS, macOS), Windows 10/11, Android 10+, GIMP, ImageMagick, and Adobe products.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert WMF to HEIF?

HEIF is a modern container format offering better compression than JPEG. Converting legacy WMF to HEIF produces compact, high-quality images.

What opens HEIF files?

Apple devices handle HEIF natively. Windows 10+, GIMP, Adobe Lightroom, and updated Android apps also support it.

Is HEIF the same as HEIC?

HEIC is a specific profile of HEIF using HEVC compression. HEIF is the broader container format supporting multiple codecs.

Is this free to use?

WMF to HEIF conversion is free for standard use. Premium plans unlock higher limits.

Can I convert from any platform?

Yes — Convertio is browser-based and works on every platform including Windows, macOS, Linux, and mobile.

How fast does it process?

Seconds — cloud servers handle the HEIF encoding quickly and efficiently.
