55+ Output Formats

Convert HCOM to 55+ audio formats or bring other audio into HCOM. 153 conversion paths ensure total flexibility.

Simple by Design

The entire workflow — upload, pick format, convert — is built to be obvious. No manual, no training, just results.

Adjustable Encoding

Modify bitrate, sample rate, and channel count before converting. Whether archiving or sharing, you define the output parameters.

Mac Compression Pioneer

HCOM uses Huffman coding to compress Macintosh audio — one of the earliest lossy audio compression schemes. Convertio bridges it to the modern era.

Privacy Protected

All uploaded recordings are erased right after processing. Completed files are automatically purged from servers within 24 hours.

Cloud-Driven Conversion

Processing runs on remote servers, so your device handles nothing beyond the upload. No software installations, no performance impact.

How to convert HCOM file

1

Drop your HCOM recording into Convertio or upload it from Computer, Google Drive, Dropbox, or a URL.

2

Choose from 55+ output formats — AAC, MP3, FLAC, OGG, AIFF, WAV, and many more.

3

Optionally tweak bitrate, sample rate, or channels to tailor the output for your use case.

4

Start the conversion and download the result once encoding completes.

About format

HCOM is a Huffman-coded audio format from the early Macintosh era, designed to shrink digitized sound for distribution on floppy disks and bulletin board systems when storage was precious and modems were slow. The encoder takes 8-bit unsigned PCM input, computes a frequency table of sample-delta values, and builds an optimal Huffman tree that replaces common deltas with short bit sequences. Compression ratios of 2:1 or better were typical for speech recordings, a meaningful saving when a 3.5-inch floppy held only 800 KB. Files were distributed as Macintosh resource forks and played through utilities like SoundApp and the BinHex ecosystem that defined Mac software exchange in the late 1980s. The format supported sample rates up to 22.255 kHz, matching the output capabilities of original Macintosh sound hardware. Tools such as SoX retain HCOM decoding support, ensuring that archived recordings remain accessible decades later. HCOM holds three practical advantages for preservation work: lossless compression that recovers the original samples exactly, a self-contained Huffman table embedded in each file for dependency-free decoding, and historical prevalence across thousands of vintage Mac sound archives.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert HCOM recordings?

HCOM is an old Macintosh Huffman-compressed audio format. Modern systems do not support it, so converting to MP3 or WAV is essential for playback today.

What programs handle HCOM audio?

SoX and some vintage Mac utilities can decode HCOM. For practical everyday use, converting to a universal format via Convertio is the best route.

Is HCOM conversion on Convertio free?

Yes, core audio conversion is free. Premium plans add extra capacity for users with large archives or demanding processing needs.

Can multiple HCOM recordings be converted at once?

Batch processing is fully supported — upload several HCOM recordings, assign formats, and convert the entire set in one run.

What quality can I expect from the converted audio?

Lossless targets like WAV or FLAC preserve every bit. Lossy options like MP3 at high bitrates sound excellent for general listening.
