About formats

DOCM is a macro-enabled document format for Microsoft Word, introduced with Office 2007 as part of the Office Open XML family. Structurally identical to DOCX — a ZIP archive containing XML parts for document content, styles, themes, and media — DOCM adds the ability to store and execute VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) macro code within the document. The separate .docm extension was a deliberate security measure: users and administrators can distinguish macro-containing files by extension alone, and group policies can restrict macro-enabled formats while allowing standard DOCX documents to open freely. DOCM files store VBA projects in a vbaProject.bin stream within the ZIP package alongside the same XML document content used by DOCX. Macros in Word documents enable automated report generation, custom form processing, document assembly from templates and data sources, and integration with external systems. One advantage is document-level automation — a DOCM file can include routines that populate content from databases, enforce formatting rules, validate fields before submission, or generate derivative documents automatically. The format preserves full compatibility with the OOXML specification, so all standard Word features — styles, tracked changes, comments, embedded media — work identically to DOCX. DOCM is supported by Microsoft Word on Windows and macOS, with macro execution limited to the desktop application.

RGF (Robot Graphics Format) is a simple monochrome bitmap image format used by LEGO Mindstorms EV3 programmable robotics kits, introduced with the EV3 system on September 1, 2013. RGF files store 1-bit (black and white) images designed for display on the EV3 Intelligent Brick's 178x128 pixel monochrome LCD screen. The format uses a minimal structure: a header containing the image width and height as binary values, followed by the pixel data where each bit represents one pixel (1 for black, 0 for white), packed eight per byte in row-major order. RGF images are used as custom display graphics in EV3 programs — students and hobbyists create them for robot status displays, user interfaces, splash screens, and animation frames shown on the brick's screen during program execution. The images are typically designed using LEGO's EV3 software (which includes a built-in image editor) or converted from other formats using community tools. RGF fits within LEGO's broader educational robotics platform, where the Mindstorms system teaches programming, engineering, and computational thinking to students worldwide. One advantage is the format's role in educational technology: RGF provides a simple, concrete example of how digital images are represented as binary data — a concept that students working with Mindstorms can directly observe by examining the file contents and seeing the corresponding image on the brick's screen. The format's simplicity makes it accessible for young programmers learning about file formats and binary data. RGF files can be created and converted using ImageMagick, the EV3 development environment, and community tools like ev3dev.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert DOCM to RGF?

RGF is a small monochrome format used for displaying graphics on LEGO Mindstorms robot screens. Converting from DOCM makes your pages accessible in this format.

What software opens RGF files?

LEGO Mindstorms software and NXT/EV3 programming tools — these all handle RGF without additional plugins or conversion steps.

Does RGF contain macro code?

No — RGF is not a document format and cannot carry VBA macros. All automation code from the DOCM is removed.

Is the rendering quality high?

Yes — document pages render at good resolution. Text, tables, and embedded images from the DOCM are reproduced with clarity.

Does this conversion cost anything?

Basic DOCM to RGF conversion is free. Upgraded Convertio plans offer expanded capacity for larger files and batch jobs.

Does it work in my browser?

Completely. Convertio processes the DOCM on cloud servers — nothing to install, works on any modern browser and operating system.
