Half the File Size

HEIC compresses images to roughly 50% of JPEG file sizes at equivalent quality — your PPTM slides become compact without visible detail loss.

Apple-Native Output

HEIC is the default photo format across iPhones, iPads, and Macs. Converted PPTM slides integrate seamlessly into Apple workflows and photo libraries.

About formats

PPTM is a macro-enabled presentation format for Microsoft PowerPoint, introduced with Office 2007 as part of the Office Open XML family. Structurally identical to PPTX — a ZIP archive containing XML parts for slides, layouts, themes, and media — PPTM adds the ability to store and execute VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) macro code within the presentation. The deliberate separation of macro-enabled (.pptm) and macro-free (.pptx) extensions was a security design decision: users and administrators can identify macro-containing files by extension alone, and security policies can block or warn about macro-enabled formats while freely allowing standard PPTX files. PPTM files store VBA projects in a dedicated binary stream (vbaProject.bin) within the ZIP package, alongside the same XML slide content used by PPTX. Macros in PowerPoint presentations power automated slide generation, custom ribbon interfaces, interactive quizzes, data-driven content updates, and integration with external data sources. One advantage is workflow automation — PPTM enables repeatable processes like generating monthly report decks from database queries or updating financial charts across dozens of slides with a single button click. The format preserves full compatibility with the OOXML specification, meaning all standard PowerPoint features — transitions, animations, embedded media, SmartArt — work identically to PPTX. PPTM is supported by Microsoft PowerPoint on Windows and macOS, with macro execution limited to the desktop application.

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's branded implementation of the HEIF (High Efficiency Image File Format) standard that uses HEVC (H.265) as its image compression codec. Apple adopted HEIC as the default photo format on iPhones and iPads starting with iOS 11 in September 2017, replacing JPEG for newly captured images. HEIC files store photographs compressed with the intra-frame coding mode of the HEVC video codec, which applies sophisticated prediction, transform, and entropy coding techniques that achieve roughly 50% better compression than JPEG at equivalent visual quality. The ISOBMFF (ISO Base Media File Format) container supports multiple images in a single file, enabling Live Photos (a still plus a short video clip), burst sequences, depth maps from dual-camera systems, and HDR gain maps that allow compatible displays to render extended dynamic range. HEIC also stores alpha channels, auxiliary images for computational photography features (portrait mode depth data, semantic segmentation masks), and comprehensive EXIF/XMP metadata. One advantage is storage efficiency: iPhones shooting HEIC use roughly half the storage of equivalent JPEG captures with no visible quality loss, a significant benefit on devices where storage is finite and photos accumulate rapidly. The format's integration with Apple's ecosystem is another key strength — HEIC files are natively supported across macOS, iOS, iPadOS, and iCloud Photos, and automatic JPEG transcoding during file sharing ensures compatibility when sending photos to non-Apple devices. HEIC can also be opened by Windows 10/11 (with codec), GIMP, ImageMagick, and Adobe Lightroom.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert PPTM to HEIC?

HEIC produces images roughly half the size of JPEG at equal visual quality. Converting PPTM slides to HEIC gives you compact, high-fidelity images native to the Apple ecosystem.

What devices support HEIC?

All Apple devices running iOS 11+ and macOS High Sierra+ handle HEIC natively. Windows 10/11 supports it with a free codec extension, and Android 9+ reads it too.

Does HEIC support transparency?

Yes — HEIC can store alpha channel data, making it suitable for slide graphics that include transparent backgrounds or layered elements.

Are PPTM macros removed?

Fully. HEIC is an image format — no VBA macros, embedded objects, or executable content from the PPTM source can exist in the output.

How does HEIC compare to JPEG?

HEIC uses HEVC compression, which is roughly twice as efficient as JPEG at the same perceptual quality. Colors are more accurate thanks to wider bit-depth support.
