About formats

PPTM is a macro-enabled presentation format for Microsoft PowerPoint, introduced with Office 2007 as part of the Office Open XML family. Structurally identical to PPTX — a ZIP archive containing XML parts for slides, layouts, themes, and media — PPTM adds the ability to store and execute VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) macro code within the presentation. The deliberate separation of macro-enabled (.pptm) and macro-free (.pptx) extensions was a security design decision: users and administrators can identify macro-containing files by extension alone, and security policies can block or warn about macro-enabled formats while freely allowing standard PPTX files. PPTM files store VBA projects in a dedicated binary stream (vbaProject.bin) within the ZIP package, alongside the same XML slide content used by PPTX. Macros in PowerPoint presentations power automated slide generation, custom ribbon interfaces, interactive quizzes, data-driven content updates, and integration with external data sources. One advantage is workflow automation — PPTM enables repeatable processes like generating monthly report decks from database queries or updating financial charts across dozens of slides with a single button click. The format preserves full compatibility with the OOXML specification, meaning all standard PowerPoint features — transitions, animations, embedded media, SmartArt — work identically to PPTX. PPTM is supported by Microsoft PowerPoint on Windows and macOS, with macro execution limited to the desktop application.

DOC is the binary document format of Microsoft Word, the word processor first released in October 1983 for MS-DOS and later becoming the dominant document creation tool worldwide. The format stores documents as OLE2 compound document files — a binary container with multiple internal streams holding text content, formatting information, embedded objects, macros, and metadata. The text stream uses a complex system of formatting runs, section descriptors, paragraph and character property tables, and style definitions to represent arbitrarily complex document layouts including columns, headers, footnotes, tables, floating images, tracked changes, and mail merge fields. The format evolved substantially through Word versions, with Word 97 establishing the binary structure that remained standard through Word 2003 and created the .doc files most commonly encountered today. One advantage is near-universal compatibility — DOC files can be opened by virtually every word processor and document viewer across all platforms, from Microsoft Office to LibreOffice, Google Docs, and Apple Pages. The format's rich feature support is another strength: DOC handles complex layouts, embedded OLE objects, VBA macros, and revision tracking that power enterprise document workflows. Although Microsoft introduced the XML-based DOCX format with Office 2007, DOC remains heavily present in existing document archives and continues to be produced by organizations maintaining compatibility with older Word installations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert PPTM to DOC?

DOC lets you repurpose presentation text into reports, briefs, or handouts. The macro layer is discarded, leaving only clean, editable written content.

What opens DOC?

Microsoft Word is the native editor. LibreOffice Writer, Google Docs, WPS Office, and Apple Pages all handle DOC files seamlessly as well.

Does the conversion capture speaker notes?

Speaker notes attached to slides are typically included in the DOC output, giving you a complete textual record of the presentation.

Will images from slides appear in the DOC?

Embedded images transfer where possible. Complex slide layouts are restructured into a linear document flow suitable for word processing.

Is the converter free to use?

Convertio provides PPTM to DOC conversion at no cost. Upgrading unlocks larger file sizes and batch processing capabilities.

Can I edit the DOC after conversion?

Absolutely — the output is a standard Word document. Open it in any compatible editor to revise text, adjust formatting, or add content.
