About formats

PPTM is a macro-enabled presentation format for Microsoft PowerPoint, introduced with Office 2007 as part of the Office Open XML family. Structurally identical to PPTX — a ZIP archive containing XML parts for slides, layouts, themes, and media — PPTM adds the ability to store and execute VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) macro code within the presentation. The deliberate separation of macro-enabled (.pptm) and macro-free (.pptx) extensions was a security design decision: users and administrators can identify macro-containing files by extension alone, and security policies can block or warn about macro-enabled formats while freely allowing standard PPTX files. PPTM files store VBA projects in a dedicated binary stream (vbaProject.bin) within the ZIP package, alongside the same XML slide content used by PPTX. Macros in PowerPoint presentations power automated slide generation, custom ribbon interfaces, interactive quizzes, data-driven content updates, and integration with external data sources. One advantage is workflow automation — PPTM enables repeatable processes like generating monthly report decks from database queries or updating financial charts across dozens of slides with a single button click. The format preserves full compatibility with the OOXML specification, meaning all standard PowerPoint features — transitions, animations, embedded media, SmartArt — work identically to PPTX. PPTM is supported by Microsoft PowerPoint on Windows and macOS, with macro execution limited to the desktop application.

FB2 (FictionBook) is an XML-based ebook format created by Dmitry Gribov in 2004, designed to provide a clean semantic description of a book's content independent of its visual presentation. Unlike page-layout formats, FB2 encodes structure — title, authors, chapters, annotations, genres, epigraphs, poems, footnotes, and binary attachments (typically cover images) — within a single well-formed XML document. This structural approach means reading applications have full control over rendering, allowing the same file to adapt perfectly to a small phone screen or a large e-ink reader. FB2 became enormously popular in Russia and Eastern Europe, serving as the dominant format on major Russian digital libraries and ebook distribution platforms. One significant advantage is metadata richness: the format's schema mandates detailed bibliographic information including author, translator, series position, publication date, and genre classification, making library management and discovery straightforward. The plain-text XML foundation is another strength — FB2 files are human-readable, easy to validate, and simple to transform using standard XML tools like XSLT. The format specification is freely available on GitHub, and a wide ecosystem of readers, editors, and converters supports it across all major platforms, from desktop applications like Calibre to dedicated e-readers with native FB2 rendering.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert PPTM to FB2?

FB2 captures document structure precisely — chapters, sections, and text hierarchy — making it great for reading presentation content as structured prose.

What apps read FB2 files?

FBReader, CoolReader, Calibre, Moon+ Reader, and many other e-book applications support FB2 on desktop, Android, and iOS platforms.

Does FB2 support images?

FB2 can embed images as base64 data within its XML structure. Visual elements from your PPTM may be included in the output.

Is FB2 popular outside of English markets?

FB2 is especially popular in Russian-speaking countries and Eastern Europe, where it remains a widely used e-book distribution format.

Are macros stripped in the FB2 output?

Yes — FB2 is an XML text format with no mechanism for executable code. All VBA macros from the PPTM are completely discarded.

Is PPTM to FB2 conversion free?

Convertio handles this conversion at no cost. Upgraded plans provide faster processing and support for larger presentation files.
