About formats

JPEG is one of the most widely used image formats in computing, standardized by the Joint Photographic Experts Group and published as ISO/IEC 10918-1 in September 1992. The .jpeg extension is functionally identical to .jpg — both contain the same JFIF or Exif-wrapped JPEG compressed image data. The format applies lossy compression using the discrete cosine transform (DCT): images are divided into 8x8 pixel blocks, transformed into frequency coefficients, quantized to discard visually less significant information, and entropy-coded for storage. The quality-to-size tradeoff is user-selectable, with typical settings producing files 10-20 times smaller than uncompressed originals at visually acceptable quality. JPEG supports 8-bit grayscale and 24-bit color, with Exif metadata carrying camera settings, GPS coordinates, timestamps, and thumbnails. One advantage is absolute universality — JPEG is readable by every image viewer, web browser, operating system, camera, phone, and printer manufactured in the past three decades, making it the safest format for sharing photographic images with any recipient. The efficient compression of continuous-tone photographic content is another core strength: JPEG consistently produces compact files from camera sensors and real-world scenes where subtle color gradients dominate. While newer formats like WebP and AVIF achieve better compression ratios, JPEG's installed base is so vast that it remains the default output of digital cameras and the most common image format on the web.

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's branded implementation of the HEIF (High Efficiency Image File Format) standard that uses HEVC (H.265) as its image compression codec. Apple adopted HEIC as the default photo format on iPhones and iPads starting with iOS 11 in September 2017, replacing JPEG for newly captured images. HEIC files store photographs compressed with the intra-frame coding mode of the HEVC video codec, which applies sophisticated prediction, transform, and entropy coding techniques that achieve roughly 50% better compression than JPEG at equivalent visual quality. The ISOBMFF (ISO Base Media File Format) container supports multiple images in a single file, enabling Live Photos (a still plus a short video clip), burst sequences, depth maps from dual-camera systems, and HDR gain maps that allow compatible displays to render extended dynamic range. HEIC also stores alpha channels, auxiliary images for computational photography features (portrait mode depth data, semantic segmentation masks), and comprehensive EXIF/XMP metadata. One advantage is storage efficiency: iPhones shooting HEIC use roughly half the storage of equivalent JPEG captures with no visible quality loss, a significant benefit on devices where storage is finite and photos accumulate rapidly. The format's integration with Apple's ecosystem is another key strength — HEIC files are natively supported across macOS, iOS, iPadOS, and iCloud Photos, and automatic JPEG transcoding during file sharing ensures compatibility when sending photos to non-Apple devices. HEIC can also be opened by Windows 10/11 (with codec), GIMP, ImageMagick, and Adobe Lightroom.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert JPEG to HEIC?

HEIC provides superior compression compared to JPEG — same visual quality at roughly half the size. Popular on Apple devices for efficient storage.

How do I open HEIC?

Open HEIC using Adobe Lightroom, Windows Photos (Windows 10+), IrfanView, GIMP. Both desktop and web-based tools can handle this format without issues.

Does this work on mobile devices?

Yes — the converter runs in any modern web browser, including mobile. Whether you use iOS, Android, Windows, or macOS, just open convertio.tools and convert.

Do I need to pay to convert JPEG to HEIC?

Basic conversions are free — no account required. Convertio also offers premium tiers for users who need higher throughput or larger inputs.

Will HEIC work on Windows?

Windows 10 and later can display HEIC with the HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store. macOS and iOS support HEIC natively out of the box.
