About formats

PPTM is a macro-enabled presentation format for Microsoft PowerPoint, introduced with Office 2007 as part of the Office Open XML family. Structurally identical to PPTX — a ZIP archive containing XML parts for slides, layouts, themes, and media — PPTM adds the ability to store and execute VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) macro code within the presentation. The deliberate separation of macro-enabled (.pptm) and macro-free (.pptx) extensions was a security design decision: users and administrators can identify macro-containing files by extension alone, and security policies can block or warn about macro-enabled formats while freely allowing standard PPTX files. PPTM files store VBA projects in a dedicated binary stream (vbaProject.bin) within the ZIP package, alongside the same XML slide content used by PPTX. Macros in PowerPoint presentations power automated slide generation, custom ribbon interfaces, interactive quizzes, data-driven content updates, and integration with external data sources. One advantage is workflow automation — PPTM enables repeatable processes like generating monthly report decks from database queries or updating financial charts across dozens of slides with a single button click. The format preserves full compatibility with the OOXML specification, meaning all standard PowerPoint features — transitions, animations, embedded media, SmartArt — work identically to PPTX. PPTM is supported by Microsoft PowerPoint on Windows and macOS, with macro execution limited to the desktop application.

PDB (Palm Database) is a generic database container format created by Palm, Inc. for the Palm OS platform, first appearing with the original PalmPilot in March 1996. In the ebook context, PDB files most commonly use the PalmDOC or Plucker encoding to store readable text with basic formatting. The format consists of a 78-byte header identifying the database name, creation date, and record count, followed by a record index table and the data records themselves. PalmDOC-encoded PDB files use a simple LZ77-based compression scheme to pack plain text efficiently, while Plucker extends this with HTML rendering, image support, and hyperlink navigation. PDB ebooks powered a thriving mobile reading ecosystem years before dedicated e-readers existed — millions of Palm OS users carried entire libraries on devices like the Palm V, Tungsten, and Treo handhelds. A primary advantage is extreme simplicity: the flat record structure and minimal overhead mean PDB files parse instantly even on severely constrained hardware with limited memory and processing power. The open, well-documented structure is another strength, having spawned numerous reader applications across Palm OS, Windows, and later mobile platforms. Though the Palm platform is long discontinued, PDB ebooks remain accessible through conversion tools and readers like Calibre, and the format holds historical significance as one of the earliest practical mobile ebook solutions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert PPTM to PDB?

PDB packages your slide text into a compact format readable on Palm devices, older e-readers, and desktop PDB-compatible apps — great for offline reading.

What opens PDB?

Calibre, FBReader, and Palm OS devices read PDB natively. Several cross-platform e-book management tools also import and convert PDB files.

Does PDB retain slide formatting?

PDB focuses on text content. Complex slide layouts, graphics, and formatting are simplified into a streamlined reading experience.

Are macros a concern in PDB?

Not at all. PDB is a document/database format with no executable capabilities — all VBA macros from the PPTM are discarded completely.

Can I read PDB on modern devices?

Yes — e-book managers like Calibre let you open or convert PDB on any modern computer, and many mobile reading apps support the format.

Is this conversion free?

Convertio handles PPTM to PDB at no charge. Premium plans are available if you need higher throughput or batch conversion.
