Lossless Animation Quality

MNG stores animation frames with PNG-quality compression — your PPS slides become crisp, full-color animated images without the 256-color GIF limitation.

All Slides in One Run

Upload a PPS slideshow and receive all slides rendered as MNG animation frames in a single conversion — no slide-by-slide effort needed.

Automatic Data Cleanup

Uploaded PPS slideshows are deleted immediately after processing. MNG output is purged within 24 hours — your presentation content stays confidential.

About formats

PPS (PowerPoint Slideshow) is a binary presentation format from Microsoft that functions identically to PPT with one behavioral difference: double-clicking a PPS file launches it directly in slideshow (full-screen) mode rather than opening the editing interface. The format uses the same OLE2 compound document structure as PPT, storing slides, text, images, animations, transitions, speaker notes, and embedded objects in binary streams. PPS files are typically produced by saving a finished PPT presentation in slideshow format, signaling that the content is intended for viewing rather than editing — though the file can still be opened for editing through PowerPoint's File menu. The format gained widespread use in corporate environments for distributing ready-to-present slide decks, training materials, kiosk displays, and self-running presentations. One advantage is presentation-ready behavior — recipients can launch a PPS file and immediately begin presenting without navigating editing tools, reducing the chance of accidentally modifying content or revealing speaker notes. The auto-play capability is another strength for unattended scenarios: combined with automatic timing and looping features, PPS files power information kiosks, digital signage, and lobby displays that run continuously without operator interaction. While the newer PPSX format has superseded PPS for current workflows, the binary slideshow format remains encountered in archived corporate materials and legacy presentation libraries.

MNG (Multiple-image Network Graphics) is an animation and multiple-image format designed as the animated counterpart to PNG, with its specification reaching version 1.0 on January 31, 2001. Developed by Glenn Randers-Pehrson and members of the PNG development community, MNG extends PNG's capabilities with support for frame-based animation sequences, slide shows, complex sprite overlays, and JNG (JPEG Network Graphics) frames for lossy compression of photographic content within the same container. An MNG file consists of a series of chunks (following PNG's chunk-based architecture): MHDR and MEND chunks bookend the datastream, with embedded PNG or JNG images as individual frames and control chunks (DEFI, FRAM, LOOP, ENDL, TERM, BACK, BASI, CLON, PAST, DISC, SHOW) directing playback timing, looping behavior, layer compositing, and memory management. The format supports both full-frame replacement and delta (difference) updates for efficient encoding of animations with static backgrounds, as well as object-based animation where sprites are defined once and repositioned across frames. One advantage is technical sophistication: MNG provides a level of animation control that GIF and APNG cannot match — frame-accurate timing, nested loops, conditional branches, interframe compression, and mixed lossy/lossless content within a single animation. The PNG-based foundation ensures lossless quality with full alpha transparency for each frame. MNG is supported by ImageMagick, GIMP, and various media players, though browser support was limited, which led to APNG's emergence as a simpler alternative for web animation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert PPS to MNG?

MNG is a lossless animation format derived from PNG. Converting PPS slides to MNG preserves visual quality across frames without the color limitations of GIF.

What opens MNG images?

Firefox historically supported MNG. Current viewers include XnView, IrfanView, and ImageMagick. Konqueror and some specialized tools also display MNG animations.

How does MNG compare to GIF?

MNG supports full-color images (not limited to 256 colors), lossless compression, and alpha transparency — producing higher quality animations than GIF.

Does MNG animate like a GIF?

Yes — MNG is designed for animations. Multiple frames can play in sequence with configurable timing, similar to animated GIF but with superior image quality.

Is PPS to MNG conversion free?

Standard conversions are free. Premium plans handle larger presentations and batch processing.

Is MNG widely supported today?

MNG adoption is limited compared to GIF or APNG. It remains useful in specific applications where lossless multi-frame animation quality is required.
