About formats

PPS (PowerPoint Slideshow) is a binary presentation format from Microsoft that functions identically to PPT with one behavioral difference: double-clicking a PPS file launches it directly in slideshow (full-screen) mode rather than opening the editing interface. The format uses the same OLE2 compound document structure as PPT, storing slides, text, images, animations, transitions, speaker notes, and embedded objects in binary streams. PPS files are typically produced by saving a finished PPT presentation in slideshow format, signaling that the content is intended for viewing rather than editing — though the file can still be opened for editing through PowerPoint's File menu. The format gained widespread use in corporate environments for distributing ready-to-present slide decks, training materials, kiosk displays, and self-running presentations. One advantage is presentation-ready behavior — recipients can launch a PPS file and immediately begin presenting without navigating editing tools, reducing the chance of accidentally modifying content or revealing speaker notes. The auto-play capability is another strength for unattended scenarios: combined with automatic timing and looping features, PPS files power information kiosks, digital signage, and lobby displays that run continuously without operator interaction. While the newer PPSX format has superseded PPS for current workflows, the binary slideshow format remains encountered in archived corporate materials and legacy presentation libraries.

DOCM is a macro-enabled document format for Microsoft Word, introduced with Office 2007 as part of the Office Open XML family. Structurally identical to DOCX — a ZIP archive containing XML parts for document content, styles, themes, and media — DOCM adds the ability to store and execute VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) macro code within the document. The separate .docm extension was a deliberate security measure: users and administrators can distinguish macro-containing files by extension alone, and group policies can restrict macro-enabled formats while allowing standard DOCX documents to open freely. DOCM files store VBA projects in a vbaProject.bin stream within the ZIP package alongside the same XML document content used by DOCX. Macros in Word documents enable automated report generation, custom form processing, document assembly from templates and data sources, and integration with external systems. One advantage is document-level automation — a DOCM file can include routines that populate content from databases, enforce formatting rules, validate fields before submission, or generate derivative documents automatically. The format preserves full compatibility with the OOXML specification, so all standard Word features — styles, tracked changes, comments, embedded media — work identically to DOCX. DOCM is supported by Microsoft Word on Windows and macOS, with macro execution limited to the desktop application.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert PPS to DOCM?

DOCM gives you an editable Word document that also supports macros — useful when slideshow content needs to become part of an automated document workflow.

What opens DOCM files?

Microsoft Word 2007 and later, LibreOffice Writer, and WPS Office all open DOCM documents. Google Docs can import them with some limitations on macros.

Does the conversion create macros?

No — the DOCM format simply permits macros. Conversion extracts PPS content into the document, and you can add macro functionality afterward in Word.

Will embedded images be included?

Yes, images from your PPS slides appear as inline graphics in the resulting DOCM document.

Is PPS to DOCM free?

Standard conversions are free. Premium subscriptions provide larger file limits and priority processing for batch jobs.

Can I save the DOCM as a regular DOCX later?

Yes. In Word, use Save As and choose DOCX to strip the macro capability and keep the document as a standard Word file.
