About formats

POTX (PowerPoint Template XML) is the Open XML template format for Microsoft PowerPoint, introduced with Office 2007. A POTX file is a ZIP archive containing XML parts that define slide masters, slide layouts, theme colors, theme fonts, theme effects, placeholder configurations, and default content — everything needed to establish a consistent visual foundation for new presentations. When applied, a POTX template creates a new PPTX document inheriting the template's complete design system, including multiple slide layout variants (title, content, two-column, comparison, blank, and custom layouts) each with precisely positioned placeholders. The XML-based structure brings advantages over the legacy POT format: templates can be inspected and modified using standard XML tools, design elements are cleanly separated into dedicated files (theme.xml, slideMaster.xml, slideLayout.xml), and built-in ZIP compression yields smaller file sizes. One advantage is design system management — POTX files encapsulate an entire visual identity as a distributable package, and the modular XML structure makes it straightforward to update individual elements like color schemes or font stacks without rebuilding the entire template. Broad compatibility is another strength: POTX templates work in PowerPoint on Windows and macOS, LibreOffice Impress, and online platforms. The format integrates with PowerPoint's template gallery and organizational template libraries, enabling centralized design governance across large teams.

AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is a modern image format derived from the AV1 video codec, developed by the Alliance for Open Media and specified in February 2019. The format leverages the intra-frame coding tools of AV1 — a royalty-free video codec backed by Google, Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Netflix, and other major technology companies — to compress still images with substantially higher efficiency than JPEG, PNG, or even WebP. AVIF stores images in the HEIF (High Efficiency Image File Format) container, supporting both lossy and lossless compression, HDR (high dynamic range) with wide color gamuts up to 12-bit depth, alpha transparency, and animated sequences. At equivalent visual quality, AVIF files are typically 30-50% smaller than WebP and 50-70% smaller than JPEG, representing the largest compression improvement in mainstream image formats in over a decade. One advantage is exceptional compression efficiency — AVIF delivers visually indistinguishable images at dramatically lower file sizes, directly reducing bandwidth consumption and improving page load times for web content. The royalty-free licensing model provides another key strength: unlike HEIC/HEIF which relies on patent-encumbered HEVC, AVIF's AV1 foundation is free for anyone to implement without licensing fees. Browser support has reached broad adoption, with Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge all rendering AVIF natively. The format is rapidly gaining adoption for web images where quality-to-size ratio is paramount.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert POTX to AVIF?

AVIF offers superior compression with excellent visual quality — ideal for publishing template previews on the web at a fraction of the file size.

What browsers support AVIF?

Chrome, Firefox, Opera, and Safari all support AVIF. The format is widely adopted as a modern successor to JPEG and WebP.

Does AVIF keep transparency?

Yes. AVIF supports alpha channels, so transparent regions from your POTX template backgrounds are preserved in the output image.

How does AVIF compare to JPEG?

AVIF achieves noticeably smaller files at the same perceived quality. It also supports HDR, wide color gamut, and transparency — features JPEG lacks.

Is this POTX to AVIF tool free?

Convertio provides free POTX to AVIF conversion. Premium tiers add higher throughput and larger file allowances for demanding use cases.

Will my template colors stay accurate?

AVIF supports wide color gamut and high bit depth, so gradients, brand colors, and subtle tones from your template render faithfully.
