About formats

POTX (PowerPoint Template XML) is the Open XML template format for Microsoft PowerPoint, introduced with Office 2007. A POTX file is a ZIP archive containing XML parts that define slide masters, slide layouts, theme colors, theme fonts, theme effects, placeholder configurations, and default content — everything needed to establish a consistent visual foundation for new presentations. When applied, a POTX template creates a new PPTX document inheriting the template's complete design system, including multiple slide layout variants (title, content, two-column, comparison, blank, and custom layouts) each with precisely positioned placeholders. The XML-based structure brings advantages over the legacy POT format: templates can be inspected and modified using standard XML tools, design elements are cleanly separated into dedicated files (theme.xml, slideMaster.xml, slideLayout.xml), and built-in ZIP compression yields smaller file sizes. One advantage is design system management — POTX files encapsulate an entire visual identity as a distributable package, and the modular XML structure makes it straightforward to update individual elements like color schemes or font stacks without rebuilding the entire template. Broad compatibility is another strength: POTX templates work in PowerPoint on Windows and macOS, LibreOffice Impress, and online platforms. The format integrates with PowerPoint's template gallery and organizational template libraries, enabling centralized design governance across large teams.

PSD (Photoshop Document) is the native file format of Adobe Photoshop, the industry-standard raster image editor first released on February 19, 1990. PSD files preserve the complete editing state of a Photoshop project: all layers (raster, text, adjustment, shape, and smart object layers) with their positions, blending modes, opacity, and layer effects; layer masks and vector masks; alpha channels; spot color channels; paths; guides; slices; and the full undo history. The format supports images up to 30,000 x 30,000 pixels (PSB, the large document format, extends this to 300,000 x 300,000) in color modes including RGB, CMYK, Lab, Grayscale, Indexed, Duotone, and Multichannel, at 1, 8, 16, or 32 bits per channel. PSD files use a combination of RLE compression for individual layer data and store composite (flattened) preview images for quick display by applications that cannot parse the full layer structure. The format has become a de facto standard for professional creative workflows far beyond Photoshop itself — photographers, graphic designers, web developers, and video post-production artists exchange PSD files as the working format that preserves creative flexibility. One advantage is the non-destructive editing model: PSD preserves every layer, mask, adjustment, and effect as independently editable elements, allowing creative decisions to be revised at any point without starting over. The format's role as the interchange standard for the creative industry provides another core strength — PSD files can be opened by Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, After Effects, Premiere Pro, as well as Affinity Photo, GIMP, Sketch, Figma, and Photopea, making it the lingua franca of visual design.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert POTX to PSD?

PSD brings your template into the Photoshop ecosystem, where you can apply advanced retouching, compositing, and effects that PowerPoint cannot provide.

What programs open PSD files?

Adobe Photoshop is the primary editor. GIMP, Affinity Photo, Photopea, and Krita also open PSD files with varying levels of layer support.

Will layers be preserved in the PSD?

The conversion renders each template slide as a flattened image layer within the PSD. Individual slide elements are not separated into distinct layers.

Does PSD support transparency?

Yes. PSD fully supports alpha channels and transparency. Transparent areas in your POTX template carry over to the PSD output.

Is this POTX to PSD conversion free?

Convertio converts POTX to PSD at no charge. Premium plans unlock batch processing and larger upload allowances.

PSD vs TIFF for print work?

PSD is ideal when you plan to edit further in Photoshop. TIFF is more universally accepted by print shops and prepress software when no further editing is needed.
