Superior Compression

AVIF produces some of the smallest image files available while maintaining excellent visual quality — perfect for fast-loading web pages.

Modern Browser Support

Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge all render AVIF natively. Your converted images display correctly across the modern web.

Server-Side Encoding

AVIF encoding is computationally intensive, but Convertio handles it on cloud servers — your device stays fast during conversion.

About formats

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's branded implementation of the HEIF (High Efficiency Image File Format) standard that uses HEVC (H.265) as its image compression codec. Apple adopted HEIC as the default photo format on iPhones and iPads starting with iOS 11 in September 2017, replacing JPEG for newly captured images. HEIC files store photographs compressed with the intra-frame coding mode of the HEVC video codec, which applies sophisticated prediction, transform, and entropy coding techniques that achieve roughly 50% better compression than JPEG at equivalent visual quality. The ISOBMFF (ISO Base Media File Format) container supports multiple images in a single file, enabling Live Photos (a still plus a short video clip), burst sequences, depth maps from dual-camera systems, and HDR gain maps that allow compatible displays to render extended dynamic range. HEIC also stores alpha channels, auxiliary images for computational photography features (portrait mode depth data, semantic segmentation masks), and comprehensive EXIF/XMP metadata. One advantage is storage efficiency: iPhones shooting HEIC use roughly half the storage of equivalent JPEG captures with no visible quality loss, a significant benefit on devices where storage is finite and photos accumulate rapidly. The format's integration with Apple's ecosystem is another key strength — HEIC files are natively supported across macOS, iOS, iPadOS, and iCloud Photos, and automatic JPEG transcoding during file sharing ensures compatibility when sending photos to non-Apple devices. HEIC can also be opened by Windows 10/11 (with codec), GIMP, ImageMagick, and Adobe Lightroom.

AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is a modern image format derived from the AV1 video codec, developed by the Alliance for Open Media and specified in February 2019. The format leverages the intra-frame coding tools of AV1 — a royalty-free video codec backed by Google, Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Netflix, and other major technology companies — to compress still images with substantially higher efficiency than JPEG, PNG, or even WebP. AVIF stores images in the HEIF (High Efficiency Image File Format) container, supporting both lossy and lossless compression, HDR (high dynamic range) with wide color gamuts up to 12-bit depth, alpha transparency, and animated sequences. At equivalent visual quality, AVIF files are typically 30-50% smaller than WebP and 50-70% smaller than JPEG, representing the largest compression improvement in mainstream image formats in over a decade. One advantage is exceptional compression efficiency — AVIF delivers visually indistinguishable images at dramatically lower file sizes, directly reducing bandwidth consumption and improving page load times for web content. The royalty-free licensing model provides another key strength: unlike HEIC/HEIF which relies on patent-encumbered HEVC, AVIF's AV1 foundation is free for anyone to implement without licensing fees. Browser support has reached broad adoption, with Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge all rendering AVIF natively. The format is rapidly gaining adoption for web images where quality-to-size ratio is paramount.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert HEIC to AVIF?

AVIF offers even better compression than HEIC and is supported by all modern browsers — making it the top choice for web-optimized images.

What programs open AVIF?

Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, Windows 11 Photos, GIMP, ImageMagick, and an expanding list of modern viewers and editors.

Is AVIF better than HEIC for the web?

For web delivery, yes — AVIF has broader browser support than HEIC and delivers comparable or superior compression at the same quality.

Does AVIF support transparency?

Yes, AVIF supports alpha channels for transparency, plus HDR color and wide gamut — more versatile than standard HEIC for web graphics.

Is HEIC to AVIF conversion free?

Standard conversions are free on Convertio. Premium plans provide faster encoding and higher resolution support.
