About formats

POTX (PowerPoint Template XML) is the Open XML template format for Microsoft PowerPoint, introduced with Office 2007. A POTX file is a ZIP archive containing XML parts that define slide masters, slide layouts, theme colors, theme fonts, theme effects, placeholder configurations, and default content — everything needed to establish a consistent visual foundation for new presentations. When applied, a POTX template creates a new PPTX document inheriting the template's complete design system, including multiple slide layout variants (title, content, two-column, comparison, blank, and custom layouts) each with precisely positioned placeholders. The XML-based structure brings advantages over the legacy POT format: templates can be inspected and modified using standard XML tools, design elements are cleanly separated into dedicated files (theme.xml, slideMaster.xml, slideLayout.xml), and built-in ZIP compression yields smaller file sizes. One advantage is design system management — POTX files encapsulate an entire visual identity as a distributable package, and the modular XML structure makes it straightforward to update individual elements like color schemes or font stacks without rebuilding the entire template. Broad compatibility is another strength: POTX templates work in PowerPoint on Windows and macOS, LibreOffice Impress, and online platforms. The format integrates with PowerPoint's template gallery and organizational template libraries, enabling centralized design governance across large teams.

EPUB (Electronic Publication) is an open ebook standard originally developed by the International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF) and now maintained by the W3C following the organizations' merger in 2017. The first version carrying the EPUB name was approved in October 2007 as a successor to the Open eBook Publication Structure (OEBPS). An EPUB file is essentially a ZIP archive containing XHTML or HTML5 content documents, CSS stylesheets, images, fonts, and metadata organized according to the Open Packaging Format and Open Container Format specifications. The current major version, EPUB 3, supports reflowable and fixed-layout content, embedded multimedia, JavaScript interactivity, MathML equations, and rich accessibility features including semantic markup and media overlays for synchronized text and audio. A defining advantage is universal device support — unlike proprietary formats, EPUB works natively on virtually every non-Kindle e-reader, tablet, and reading application, from Apple Books and Google Play Books to Kobo and dozens of third-party apps. The reflowable text model is another core strength, automatically adapting pagination, font size, and margins to match any screen dimension and user preference. EPUB's open specification and active W3C stewardship ensure long-term preservation and vendor independence, making it the de facto standard for digital publishing across libraries, academic institutions, and commercial retailers worldwide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert POTX to EPUB?

EPUB turns your template content into a portable, reflowable e-book — useful for distributing training materials, guides, or design documentation.

What reads EPUB files?

Apple Books, Kobo readers, Google Play Books, Calibre, and most e-reader apps on iOS and Android handle EPUB natively.

Does EPUB support images from the template?

Yes. Visual elements from your POTX are embedded in the EPUB. The layout adapts to reflowable text, so images sit naturally within the reading flow.

Will the e-book have chapters?

The conversion generates structure from your slide titles and content hierarchy, producing logical sections that work as chapter-like navigation points.

Is this converter free?

POTX to EPUB conversion is free on Convertio. Premium plans offer higher file size limits and batch processing for larger projects.

Can Kindle devices read EPUB?

Recent Kindle models and the Kindle app support EPUB. For older Kindles, consider converting to AZW3 or MOBI instead.
