About formats

PPTX is the default file format for Microsoft PowerPoint presentations since Office 2007, based on the Office Open XML (OOXML) standard published as ECMA-376 and later adopted as ISO/IEC 29500. A PPTX file is a ZIP archive containing XML documents that describe slide content, layouts, themes, relationships, and metadata in a structured, human-inspectable hierarchy. Each slide, slide layout, and slide master is stored as a separate XML part, with media assets (images, audio, video) and embedded objects kept in dedicated directories within the package. The XML foundation enables programmatic creation and manipulation of presentations using standard XML tools and libraries — developers can generate, modify, or extract content from PPTX files without requiring PowerPoint itself. One significant advantage is openness and interoperability: the fully documented OOXML specification allows any software to read and write PPTX files, and the format is supported by LibreOffice Impress, Google Slides, Apple Keynote, and numerous other tools. Built-in ZIP compression is another practical strength — PPTX files are typically 50-75% smaller than equivalent PPT files, reducing storage and transfer costs. The format supports all modern PowerPoint features including SmartArt, 3D models, morph transitions, embedded fonts, accessibility metadata, and co-authoring capabilities. PPTX has become the standard interchange format for presentation content worldwide.

PGM (Portable Graymap) is the grayscale member of the Netpbm image format family, created by Jef Poskanzer in 1988 as part of the Pbmplus toolkit for Unix systems. PGM stores single-channel intensity images where each pixel holds a gray value from 0 (black) to a user-specified maximum (typically 255 for 8-bit or 65535 for 16-bit). The format exists in ASCII (magic number P2), where pixel values are written as decimal text numbers separated by whitespace, and binary (magic number P5), where values are stored as raw bytes. Both variants begin with a header specifying the magic number, width, height, and maximum gray value. PGM was designed as the grayscale intermediate in Netpbm's convert-process-convert pipeline philosophy: source images from any format are converted to PGM, processed using Netpbm's extensive command-line tool library, then converted to the target format. One advantage is format transparency — the ASCII variant makes image data directly readable by humans and trivially processable by text tools like awk and grep, invaluable for debugging and education. The scientific and computer vision community's adoption is another strength: PGM's straightforward single-channel representation makes it a natural format for image analysis algorithms, and many academic papers and course materials use PGM examples. The format is supported by ImageMagick, GIMP, and countless image processing libraries, and remains standard input for many research tools and benchmarks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert PPTX to PGM?

PGM provides clean grayscale data in a format that Unix imaging tools and scientific software consume effortlessly — useful for analysis or processing of slide visuals.

How do I open PGM files?

GIMP, IrfanView, XnView, and Netpbm tools open PGM natively. The plain-text ASCII variant can even be inspected in a basic text editor.

What is the difference between PBM and PGM?

PBM is 1-bit monochrome — only black and white. PGM adds 256 shades of gray, capturing tonal detail that PBM discards entirely.

Does PGM retain any color information?

No — PGM converts all colors to grayscale intensity values. Hue and saturation are lost, but brightness relationships between elements are preserved.

Is PPTX to PGM free?

Yes, Convertio handles this conversion for free. Premium plans unlock batch processing, larger uploads, and faster conversion times.

Is PGM suitable for machine learning?

PGM is popular in machine learning and computer vision because of its simplicity — many training datasets use the Netpbm format for grayscale image data.
