Pipeline Interchange

PPM is the standard interchange format in the Netpbm family — process your HEIC photos through any Unix imaging pipeline.

Uncompressed Color

PPM preserves exact RGB values without compression — perfect for lossless image manipulation and analysis.

Server Conversion

No Netpbm suite needed locally — Convertio handles the HEIC to PPM transformation on remote servers.

About formats

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's branded implementation of the HEIF (High Efficiency Image File Format) standard that uses HEVC (H.265) as its image compression codec. Apple adopted HEIC as the default photo format on iPhones and iPads starting with iOS 11 in September 2017, replacing JPEG for newly captured images. HEIC files store photographs compressed with the intra-frame coding mode of the HEVC video codec, which applies sophisticated prediction, transform, and entropy coding techniques that achieve roughly 50% better compression than JPEG at equivalent visual quality. The ISOBMFF (ISO Base Media File Format) container supports multiple images in a single file, enabling Live Photos (a still plus a short video clip), burst sequences, depth maps from dual-camera systems, and HDR gain maps that allow compatible displays to render extended dynamic range. HEIC also stores alpha channels, auxiliary images for computational photography features (portrait mode depth data, semantic segmentation masks), and comprehensive EXIF/XMP metadata. One advantage is storage efficiency: iPhones shooting HEIC use roughly half the storage of equivalent JPEG captures with no visible quality loss, a significant benefit on devices where storage is finite and photos accumulate rapidly. The format's integration with Apple's ecosystem is another key strength — HEIC files are natively supported across macOS, iOS, iPadOS, and iCloud Photos, and automatic JPEG transcoding during file sharing ensures compatibility when sending photos to non-Apple devices. HEIC can also be opened by Windows 10/11 (with codec), GIMP, ImageMagick, and Adobe Lightroom.

PPM (Portable Pixmap) is the full-color member of the Netpbm image format family, created by Jef Poskanzer in 1988 as part of the Pbmplus toolkit for Unix systems. PPM stores RGB color images where each pixel contains three values (red, green, blue) ranging from 0 to a specified maximum, typically 255 for 8-bit-per-channel or 65535 for 16-bit-per-channel color. The format exists in ASCII (magic number P3), where pixel values are written as decimal numbers in row-major order, and binary (magic number P6), where values are stored as raw bytes for compact representation. Both variants begin with a plain-text header: magic number, width, height, and maximum color value. PPM completes the Netpbm trio alongside PBM (monochrome) and PGM (grayscale), serving as the universal color image intermediate in the convert-process-convert pipeline that defined Netpbm's approach to format interoperability. One advantage is absolute simplicity — PPM requires no compression libraries, container parsing, or metadata handling, making it the easiest full-color format to implement from scratch in any programming language. The format's widespread adoption in scientific computing and computer graphics education is another practical strength: PPM serves as a standard I/O format for ray tracers, image processing coursework, and visualization tools where implementation simplicity outweighs file size concerns. PPM is supported by ImageMagick, GIMP, and virtually all image processing libraries.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert HEIC to PPM?

PPM is a simple full-color image format from the Netpbm family. It is widely used in image processing pipelines and academic research.

What opens PPM files?

GIMP, ImageMagick, IrfanView, XnView, and the Netpbm toolkit on Unix/Linux systems for image manipulation.

Is PPM compressed?

No — PPM stores uncompressed pixel data. Files are large but trivially easy to read and process in scripts and programs.

Can PPM be converted to other formats?

Yes — PPM is an interchange format. Convert it to PNG, JPEG, or any other format using ImageMagick or GIMP.

Is HEIC to PPM conversion free?

Standard conversions are free with Convertio. Premium plans support batch processing.
