Plotter Ready

PLT files drive pen plotters and cutting machines directly — your HEIC photo becomes physical vector output.

Machine Commands

PLT contains HPGL instructions that plotters interpret precisely — clean vector paths for mechanical reproduction.

Cloud Tracing

Vector tracing and PLT generation run on Convertio servers — no CAD software needed on your device.

About formats

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's branded implementation of the HEIF (High Efficiency Image File Format) standard that uses HEVC (H.265) as its image compression codec. Apple adopted HEIC as the default photo format on iPhones and iPads starting with iOS 11 in September 2017, replacing JPEG for newly captured images. HEIC files store photographs compressed with the intra-frame coding mode of the HEVC video codec, which applies sophisticated prediction, transform, and entropy coding techniques that achieve roughly 50% better compression than JPEG at equivalent visual quality. The ISOBMFF (ISO Base Media File Format) container supports multiple images in a single file, enabling Live Photos (a still plus a short video clip), burst sequences, depth maps from dual-camera systems, and HDR gain maps that allow compatible displays to render extended dynamic range. HEIC also stores alpha channels, auxiliary images for computational photography features (portrait mode depth data, semantic segmentation masks), and comprehensive EXIF/XMP metadata. One advantage is storage efficiency: iPhones shooting HEIC use roughly half the storage of equivalent JPEG captures with no visible quality loss, a significant benefit on devices where storage is finite and photos accumulate rapidly. The format's integration with Apple's ecosystem is another key strength — HEIC files are natively supported across macOS, iOS, iPadOS, and iCloud Photos, and automatic JPEG transcoding during file sharing ensures compatibility when sending photos to non-Apple devices. HEIC can also be opened by Windows 10/11 (with codec), GIMP, ImageMagick, and Adobe Lightroom.

PLT is a vector file format associated with HP-GL (Hewlett-Packard Graphics Language), a plotter control language introduced by Hewlett-Packard in 1977 with the HP-9872 pen plotter. PLT files contain a sequence of two-letter ASCII commands that instruct a pen plotter to move, draw lines, select pens, and render text — commands like PU (pen up), PD (pen down), PA (plot absolute), and SP (select pen) form a straightforward instruction set that directly controls physical drawing motion. The language operates on a coordinate grid measured in plotter units (typically 0.025 mm per unit), and the resulting files read almost like machine code for a drawing device. HP-GL became the dominant standard for computer-aided design output, adopted by virtually every CAD application and supported by plotters from all manufacturers throughout the 1980s and 1990s. One advantage is universal CAD compatibility — PLT files generated by AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or any engineering software can be sent directly to plotters and cutting machines without driver translation. The text-based, human-readable command structure is another strength: engineers can inspect, edit, and hand-write PLT files to troubleshoot output or generate simple drawings programmatically. HP-GL/2, an enhanced version introduced with the HP LaserJet III in 1990, added polygon fills, Bezier curves, and raster support. PLT remains actively used in engineering, architecture, and manufacturing for large-format output.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert HEIC to PLT?

PLT contains HPGL plotter commands. Converting HEIC traces your photo into vector paths that plotters and cutting machines can follow.

What uses PLT files?

Cutting plotters, pen plotters, CAD software like CorelDRAW, and CNC machines that accept HPGL commands.

Will my photo be vectorized?

Yes — the conversion traces your HEIC photo into vector paths that the plotter can draw or cut.

Is PLT good for detailed photos?

PLT works best for high-contrast images with clear outlines. Complex photos with subtle gradients may not trace well.

Is HEIC to PLT conversion free?

Standard conversions are free. Premium plans handle higher detail tracing.
