JPG is the most common file extension for images compressed with the JPEG standard, published by the Joint Photographic Experts Group as ISO/IEC 10918-1 in September 1992. The format supports 24-bit true color (16.7 million colors) and 8-bit grayscale, with Exif metadata embedding camera model, exposure settings, orientation, GPS location, and creation timestamp. One advantage is unmatched device compatibility — JPG is the native output format of virtually every digital camera and smartphone, and is displayed by every image viewer, browser, and operating system in existence. Efficient photographic compression is another strength: real-world photographs with smooth gradients and complex textures compress extremely well under DCT, typically achieving 10:1 reduction at high visual quality.
