About formats

WebM is an open, royalty-free multimedia container format developed by Google and launched at the Google I/O conference in May 2010. The format pairs the Matroska container (a subset of MKV) with VP8 or VP9 video codecs and Vorbis or Opus audio codecs, creating a fully open media stack designed specifically for web use. Google released WebM alongside the VP8 codec under permissive BSD-style licensing, removing patent and royalty barriers that hindered the adoption of H.264 for open web video. The WebM container inherits the efficient binary structure of Matroska while restricting it to web-optimized profiles, ensuring fast parsing and lightweight implementation in browsers. WebM with VP9 achieves compression efficiency competitive with H.264 High Profile and approaching HEVC, making it practical for delivering high-quality video at reduced bandwidth. Major web browsers including Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Opera support WebM playback natively, and YouTube uses VP9 in WebM as a primary delivery format for much of its content. The format supports features such as alpha channel transparency in video, making it valuable for compositing web graphics and overlays. More recently, WebM has been extended to support AV1 video, continuing its evolution as a vehicle for open codec adoption. The combination of competitive compression, zero licensing costs, and universal browser support makes WebM a cornerstone of royalty-free web multimedia delivery.

PVF (Portable Voice Format) is a simple audio file format designed for voice message storage in Linux-based telephony systems, most notably ISDN4Linux and its vbox voicemail application. The format emerged from the European ISDN ecosystem of the late 1990s, when Linux servers increasingly handled PBX and answering machine duties over digital phone lines. PVF files store raw signed 16-bit PCM samples at 8000 Hz mono, preceded by a minimal plain-text header specifying data format and byte ordering. This deliberate simplicity is one of the format's primary strengths — with no compression and a human-readable header, PVF files are trivially easy to parse, pipe, and manipulate using standard Unix tools. The 8 kHz rate matches the Nyquist requirement for telephone-bandwidth speech (300-3400 Hz), making PVF a natural intermediate format for voice processing pipelines. Another advantage is cross-architecture portability: the explicit byte-order declaration means PVF files move between big-endian and little-endian systems without ambiguity. The SoX audio toolkit provides native PVF read/write support, enabling straightforward conversion to modern formats.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert WEBM to PVF?

PVF (Portable Voice Format) stores raw voice audio data — used in telephony applications and voice processing systems that require this specific format.

What opens PVF files?

SoX (Sound eXchange), Audacity with plugins, and specialized telephony software can read PVF files for voice processing workflows.

Is PVF a common format?

PVF is highly specialized — primarily found in telephony and voice processing systems. It is not intended for general music or media playback.

Will the full audio be extracted?

The complete audio track from your WEBM video is decoded and written to PVF format without any trimming or loss.

Can I batch process files?

Upload multiple WEBM videos and extract PVF audio from each in a single session — efficient for voice processing workflows.
