About formats

AVI (Audio Video Interleave) is one of the oldest and most recognized multimedia container formats, introduced by Microsoft in November 1992 as part of its Video for Windows technology. Built on the Resource Interchange File Format (RIFF) structure, AVI interleaves audio and video data in alternating chunks, allowing synchronized playback without requiring sophisticated stream management. The format is codec-agnostic, meaning it can hold video compressed with virtually any codec, from early Cinepak and Indeo to modern DivX, Xvid, and H.264 streams. This flexibility contributed to widespread adoption across personal computers throughout the 1990s and 2000s. One notable characteristic is a straightforward internal structure that makes AVI files relatively easy to edit and process at the binary level compared to more complex modern containers. AVI also supports multiple audio streams, enabling multilingual content within a single file. However, the original specification has limitations, including a 2 GB file size ceiling in older implementations and no native support for variable frame rates or advanced subtitle formats. The OpenDML extensions (AVI 2.0) addressed the size limitation by allowing files to exceed the original boundary. Despite being decades old, AVI remains one of the most universally recognized multimedia formats and is still widely supported by media players and editing tools across all major operating systems.

PVF (Portable Voice Format) is a simple audio file format designed for voice message storage in Linux-based telephony systems, most notably ISDN4Linux and its vbox voicemail application. The format emerged from the European ISDN ecosystem of the late 1990s, when Linux servers increasingly handled PBX and answering machine duties over digital phone lines. PVF files store raw signed 16-bit PCM samples at 8000 Hz mono, preceded by a minimal plain-text header specifying data format and byte ordering. This deliberate simplicity is one of the format's primary strengths — with no compression and a human-readable header, PVF files are trivially easy to parse, pipe, and manipulate using standard Unix tools. The 8 kHz rate matches the Nyquist requirement for telephone-bandwidth speech (300-3400 Hz), making PVF a natural intermediate format for voice processing pipelines. Another advantage is cross-architecture portability: the explicit byte-order declaration means PVF files move between big-endian and little-endian systems without ambiguity. The SoX audio toolkit provides native PVF read/write support, enabling straightforward conversion to modern formats.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert AVI to PVF?

PVF is designed for voice data in telephony systems. Converting AVI audio to PVF prepares voice content for PBX and telephony applications.

What software uses PVF?

Telephony platforms, PBX systems, and SOX audio utility can read and process PVF files for voice communication and IVR applications.

Is PVF a common format?

PVF is niche — used in specific telephony and voice processing contexts. It serves specialized telecommunications and voice automation needs.

Does PVF support only voice?

PVF is optimized for voice-frequency audio. While it can carry any audio, its design targets speech clarity in telephony environments.

Is the entire audio extracted?

The full audio track from your AVI video is extracted and converted to PVF format. The video portion is discarded during processing.
