About formats

WebM is an open, royalty-free multimedia container format developed by Google and launched at the Google I/O conference in May 2010. The format pairs the Matroska container (a subset of MKV) with VP8 or VP9 video codecs and Vorbis or Opus audio codecs, creating a fully open media stack designed specifically for web use. Google released WebM alongside the VP8 codec under permissive BSD-style licensing, removing patent and royalty barriers that hindered the adoption of H.264 for open web video. The WebM container inherits the efficient binary structure of Matroska while restricting it to web-optimized profiles, ensuring fast parsing and lightweight implementation in browsers. WebM with VP9 achieves compression efficiency competitive with H.264 High Profile and approaching HEVC, making it practical for delivering high-quality video at reduced bandwidth. Major web browsers including Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Opera support WebM playback natively, and YouTube uses VP9 in WebM as a primary delivery format for much of its content. The format supports features such as alpha channel transparency in video, making it valuable for compositing web graphics and overlays. More recently, WebM has been extended to support AV1 video, continuing its evolution as a vehicle for open codec adoption. The combination of competitive compression, zero licensing costs, and universal browser support makes WebM a cornerstone of royalty-free web multimedia delivery.

WVE is the audio format native to the Psion Series 3 family of personal digital assistants, released by British company Psion PLC beginning in September 1991. These clamshell PDAs included a built-in voice recorder, and all dictation functionality relied on WVE files to store captured sound. Each file begins with the ASCII signature "ALawSoundFile**" followed by a minimal header, then raw A-law encoded audio sampled at 8 kHz — a rate inherited from digital telephony standards. At 8000 bytes per second, a one-minute recording occupies just 480 KB, which was essential given that Psion devices stored data on SRAM cards typically ranging from 128 KB to 2 MB. The A-law encoding provides reasonable speech clarity within these tight storage constraints, prioritizing intelligibility over high-fidelity reproduction. WVE files can be converted to WAV or other modern formats using SoX, Awave Studio, or specialized Psion file utilities. While the format is firmly a product of early-1990s handheld computing, it holds historical significance as one of the first audio recording formats designed for pocket-sized consumer devices. Collectors and researchers studying mobile computing history occasionally encounter WVE files when recovering data from legacy SRAM media.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert WebM to WVE?

WVE is the audio format for Psion SIBO PDAs. Converting WebM audio to WVE brings web video content to classic Psion pocket computers.

Which Psion models play WVE?

Psion Series 3, 3a, 3c, and Siena handhelds support WVE natively. These 1990s pocket computers use WVE as their audio standard.

Does modern WebM audio convert well?

WebM uses efficient modern codecs. A-law encoding in WVE simplifies the audio, but speech from web video sounds clear on Psion speakers.

Is WVE still relevant?

WVE serves retro computing collectors maintaining Psion SIBO hardware. It is the only way to play custom audio on these vintage PDAs.

Can I batch-process WebM files?

Upload multiple WebM videos and convert them to WVE at once. Build an audio collection for your Psion from web video content.
