About formats

AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) is the successor to MP3, standardized by ISO/IEC as part of the MPEG-2 and later MPEG-4 specifications. Designed collaboratively by Fraunhofer, Dolby, Sony, Nokia, and AT&T, AAC delivers superior sound quality at equivalent or lower bit rates — a 96 kbps AAC stream generally matches a 128 kbps MP3 file in perceptual quality. The codec leverages a modified discrete cosine transform combined with advanced psychoacoustic modeling and temporal noise shaping. AAC serves as the default audio format for Apple's ecosystem (iTunes, iPhone, iPad), YouTube, and many streaming services. Its first advantage is excellent compression efficiency — high-fidelity audio using significantly less storage and bandwidth. Second, the format supports sample rates from 8 kHz to 96 kHz and up to 48 channels, suiting everything from voice calls to surround sound. Third, broad industry adoption by Apple and others ensures that virtually every modern device, browser, and media player handles AAC content natively without additional plugins.

PVF (Portable Voice Format) is a simple audio file format designed for voice message storage in Linux-based telephony systems, most notably ISDN4Linux and its vbox voicemail application. The format emerged from the European ISDN ecosystem of the late 1990s, when Linux servers increasingly handled PBX and answering machine duties over digital phone lines. PVF files store raw signed 16-bit PCM samples at 8000 Hz mono, preceded by a minimal plain-text header specifying data format and byte ordering. This deliberate simplicity is one of the format's primary strengths — with no compression and a human-readable header, PVF files are trivially easy to parse, pipe, and manipulate using standard Unix tools. The 8 kHz rate matches the Nyquist requirement for telephone-bandwidth speech (300-3400 Hz), making PVF a natural intermediate format for voice processing pipelines. Another advantage is cross-architecture portability: the explicit byte-order declaration means PVF files move between big-endian and little-endian systems without ambiguity. The SoX audio toolkit provides native PVF read/write support, enabling straightforward conversion to modern formats.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert AAC to PVF?

PVF is a simple portable voice format used in certain telephony and voice processing systems — useful when your target platform requires it.

What handles PVF files?

SoX and certain PBX systems work with PVF audio. It is a niche format primarily used in voice communication software.

Is PVF good for music?

PVF is designed for voice data rather than music. Audio fidelity is basic — suitable for speech but not for rich musical content.

Are PVF files small?

PVF files store raw PCM data, so sizes depend on sample rate and bit depth. They are not compressed.

Can I convert many AAC files at once?

Yes — batch-upload your AAC files and convert them all to PVF in a single session.
