Psion Handheld Audio

Create WVE files from WAV — the native format Psion Series 5 and Revo handhelds need for audio playback.

Compact Output

A-law encoding compresses WAV audio dramatically. WVE files are small and transfer quickly to portable devices.

Private Upload

Your WAV files are deleted right after processing. WVE results are purged from servers within 24 hours.

About formats

WAV (Waveform Audio File Format) is an uncompressed audio container jointly developed by Microsoft and IBM, first published in August 1991 alongside Windows 3.1. Built on the Resource Interchange File Format (RIFF), WAV stores audio data — most commonly as linear pulse-code modulation (LPCM) — together with metadata describing sample rate, bit depth, and channel count. This straightforward structure has made WAV the de facto standard for uncompressed audio on Windows and a universally accepted interchange format across virtually every operating system, audio editor, and media player in existence. CD-quality WAV files use 16-bit samples at 44.1 kHz stereo, while professional workflows routinely employ 24-bit or 32-bit float samples at rates up to 192 kHz. A major advantage is zero-loss fidelity: because standard WAV applies no compression, the stored data is an exact digital representation of the original recording, making it the preferred choice for mastering and archiving. WAV also supports embedded metadata through INFO and BWF chunks, enabling timestamping and production notes. The main trade-off is file size — one minute of CD-quality stereo occupies roughly 10 MB — and the 32-bit RIFF structure imposes a 4 GB limit, though RF64 removes that ceiling.

WVE is the audio format native to the Psion Series 3 family of personal digital assistants, released by British company Psion PLC beginning in September 1991. These clamshell PDAs included a built-in voice recorder, and all dictation functionality relied on WVE files to store captured sound. Each file begins with the ASCII signature "ALawSoundFile**" followed by a minimal header, then raw A-law encoded audio sampled at 8 kHz — a rate inherited from digital telephony standards. At 8000 bytes per second, a one-minute recording occupies just 480 KB, which was essential given that Psion devices stored data on SRAM cards typically ranging from 128 KB to 2 MB. The A-law encoding provides reasonable speech clarity within these tight storage constraints, prioritizing intelligibility over high-fidelity reproduction. WVE files can be converted to WAV or other modern formats using SoX, Awave Studio, or specialized Psion file utilities. While the format is firmly a product of early-1990s handheld computing, it holds historical significance as one of the first audio recording formats designed for pocket-sized consumer devices. Collectors and researchers studying mobile computing history occasionally encounter WVE files when recovering data from legacy SRAM media.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert WAV to WVE?

WVE is the audio format for Psion handhelds (Series 5, Revo). To play audio on these devices, your WAV must be converted to 8-bit A-law WVE.

What plays WVE files?

Psion EPOC handhelds, Psion emulators, SoX, and VLC can handle WVE audio files.

What is A-law encoding?

A-law is an ITU-T G.711 companding standard used in European telephony. It maps 13-bit dynamic range into 8-bit storage.

Will quality be lower than WAV?

Yes — A-law at Psion sample rates produces voice-grade audio. It was designed for speech, not high-fidelity music playback.

Can I convert multiple recordings?

Upload several WAV files and produce WVE versions for each in one operation — efficient for loading audio onto a Psion device.
