About formats

MPEG (MPEG-1) is a foundational video and audio compression standard published in August 1993 by the Moving Picture Experts Group as ISO/IEC 11172. It was the first international standard for lossy compression of moving pictures and associated audio, establishing principles and techniques that would influence virtually all subsequent video codecs. MPEG-1 video achieves compression through a combination of motion-compensated prediction, discrete cosine transform coding, and variable-length entropy encoding, organized around three frame types: I-frames (intra-coded), P-frames (predicted), and B-frames (bidirectionally predicted). The standard targets bit rates around 1.5 Mbps for combined audio and video, producing quality comparable to VHS tape at SIF resolution (352x240 for NTSC). This compression level was specifically chosen to match the data throughput of 1x-speed CD-ROM drives, enabling the Video CD format that brought digital video to consumers in the early 1990s. The audio component, particularly Layer III (MP3), went on to become the most influential audio format in history. The I/P/B frame structure, motion estimation approach, and block-based transform coding established the architectural template followed by every major video codec since, from MPEG-2 through H.264 and beyond. Though long surpassed in compression efficiency, MPEG-1 remains supported by virtually all media software.

WVE is the audio format native to the Psion Series 3 family of personal digital assistants, released by British company Psion PLC beginning in September 1991. These clamshell PDAs included a built-in voice recorder, and all dictation functionality relied on WVE files to store captured sound. Each file begins with the ASCII signature "ALawSoundFile**" followed by a minimal header, then raw A-law encoded audio sampled at 8 kHz — a rate inherited from digital telephony standards. At 8000 bytes per second, a one-minute recording occupies just 480 KB, which was essential given that Psion devices stored data on SRAM cards typically ranging from 128 KB to 2 MB. The A-law encoding provides reasonable speech clarity within these tight storage constraints, prioritizing intelligibility over high-fidelity reproduction. WVE files can be converted to WAV or other modern formats using SoX, Awave Studio, or specialized Psion file utilities. While the format is firmly a product of early-1990s handheld computing, it holds historical significance as one of the first audio recording formats designed for pocket-sized consumer devices. Collectors and researchers studying mobile computing history occasionally encounter WVE files when recovering data from legacy SRAM media.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert MPEG to WVE?

WVE is the audio format for Psion SIBO PDAs. Converting MPEG audio to WVE lets you play video soundtracks on classic Psion handhelds.

What Psion devices play WVE?

Psion Series 3, 3a, 3c, and Siena play WVE natively. These early 1990s pocket computers use WVE as their standard audio format.

How does A-law sound?

A-law encoding provides telephony-grade quality. Speech content from MPEG videos sounds clear, though music loses noticeable fidelity.

Are MPEG and WVE from the same era?

Both MPEG-1 and Psion SIBO date to the early 1990s. Converting between them bridges two parallel digital standards from that period.

Is WVE still used?

WVE serves retro computing enthusiasts maintaining Psion hardware. It remains the only way to get audio onto SIBO-based pocket computers.
