Uncompressed Accuracy

PPM stores every pixel as raw RGB data with zero compression. Slide colors, gradients, and details are captured with perfect fidelity — nothing is approximated or lost.

Cloud-Processed Conversion

Rendering PPSM slides to full-color PPM runs entirely on Convertio infrastructure. Your machine handles no processing load regardless of presentation size.

Clean, Safe Output

PPM carries no macros, no embedded scripts, and no metadata. Converting from PPSM to PPM guarantees a completely sanitized image output.

About formats

PPSM (PowerPoint Slideshow with Macros) is a macro-enabled slideshow format in Microsoft PowerPoint, introduced with Office 2007 as part of the Office Open XML family. PPSM combines the auto-play slideshow behavior of PPSX with the VBA macro capabilities of PPTM — opening a PPSM file launches it directly into full-screen presentation mode while allowing embedded macro code to execute during the slideshow. The format is structurally a ZIP archive containing the same XML slide parts as other OOXML presentation formats, plus a vbaProject.bin stream housing the VBA project. This combination is particularly valuable for interactive presentations: macro-driven slideshows can respond to user input, navigate non-linearly between sections, query external databases, update content in real time, and log audience responses during training or assessment sessions. One advantage is interactive presentation capability — PPSM enables quiz-style presentations where clicking answer buttons triggers immediate scoring feedback, branching paths, or data recording, all invisible to the audience. The macro-enabled slideshow format also supports self-contained automation: a PPSM file can run initialization routines on launch, configure the display environment, and clean up resources on exit without any manual intervention. As with all macro-enabled Office Open XML formats, the distinct .ppsm extension helps administrators enforce security policies that differentiate between trusted macro content and standard presentations. PPSM is supported exclusively in Microsoft PowerPoint desktop editions.

PPM (Portable Pixmap) is the full-color member of the Netpbm image format family, created by Jef Poskanzer in 1988 as part of the Pbmplus toolkit for Unix systems. PPM stores RGB color images where each pixel contains three values (red, green, blue) ranging from 0 to a specified maximum, typically 255 for 8-bit-per-channel or 65535 for 16-bit-per-channel color. The format exists in ASCII (magic number P3), where pixel values are written as decimal numbers in row-major order, and binary (magic number P6), where values are stored as raw bytes for compact representation. Both variants begin with a plain-text header: magic number, width, height, and maximum color value. PPM completes the Netpbm trio alongside PBM (monochrome) and PGM (grayscale), serving as the universal color image intermediate in the convert-process-convert pipeline that defined Netpbm's approach to format interoperability. One advantage is absolute simplicity — PPM requires no compression libraries, container parsing, or metadata handling, making it the easiest full-color format to implement from scratch in any programming language. The format's widespread adoption in scientific computing and computer graphics education is another practical strength: PPM serves as a standard I/O format for ray tracers, image processing coursework, and visualization tools where implementation simplicity outweighs file size concerns. PPM is supported by ImageMagick, GIMP, and virtually all image processing libraries.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert PPSM to PPM?

PPM is a universal interchange format for image processing pipelines. Its simplicity makes it ideal for feeding slide graphics into scripts, research tools, and automated workflows.

What opens PPM?

GIMP, IrfanView, XnView, and all Netpbm utilities handle PPM. Most Linux image viewers and scientific visualization tools read PPM as a standard input format.

Does PPM preserve slide colors?

Yes — PPM stores raw RGB triplets for every pixel. All colors from your PPSM slides are faithfully captured without any lossy compression or palette reduction.

What about macros in the PPM output?

PPM contains nothing but pixel data — no metadata, no macros, no embedded code. All VBA content from the PPSM is completely eliminated.

Is this free?

Yes — Convertio converts PPSM to PPM at no cost. Premium accounts unlock higher volume and file size allowances for intensive batch processing.

How does PPM compare to PNG?

PPM is uncompressed, making files much larger than PNG. However, its simplicity makes it trivial to parse in code — ideal for programmatic image processing.
