PSD is the industry standard for image editing. Converting PPSM to PSD puts your slide visuals directly into Photoshop where you can refine, layer, and repurpose them.

Full Color Preservation

Every color, gradient, and visual detail from your PPSM slides is faithfully captured in the PSD output at full RGB depth for professional-quality editing.

Macro-Free, Edit-Ready

About formats

PPSM (PowerPoint Slideshow with Macros) is a macro-enabled slideshow format in Microsoft PowerPoint, introduced with Office 2007 as part of the Office Open XML family. PPSM combines the auto-play slideshow behavior of PPSX with the VBA macro capabilities of PPTM — opening a PPSM file launches it directly into full-screen presentation mode while allowing embedded macro code to execute during the slideshow. The format is structurally a ZIP archive containing the same XML slide parts as other OOXML presentation formats, plus a vbaProject.bin stream housing the VBA project. This combination is particularly valuable for interactive presentations: macro-driven slideshows can respond to user input, navigate non-linearly between sections, query external databases, update content in real time, and log audience responses during training or assessment sessions. One advantage is interactive presentation capability — PPSM enables quiz-style presentations where clicking answer buttons triggers immediate scoring feedback, branching paths, or data recording, all invisible to the audience. The macro-enabled slideshow format also supports self-contained automation: a PPSM file can run initialization routines on launch, configure the display environment, and clean up resources on exit without any manual intervention. As with all macro-enabled Office Open XML formats, the distinct .ppsm extension helps administrators enforce security policies that differentiate between trusted macro content and standard presentations. PPSM is supported exclusively in Microsoft PowerPoint desktop editions.

PSD (Photoshop Document) is the native file format of Adobe Photoshop, the industry-standard raster image editor first released on February 19, 1990. PSD files preserve the complete editing state of a Photoshop project: all layers (raster, text, adjustment, shape, and smart object layers) with their positions, blending modes, opacity, and layer effects; layer masks and vector masks; alpha channels; spot color channels; paths; guides; slices; and the full undo history. The format supports images up to 30,000 x 30,000 pixels (PSB, the large document format, extends this to 300,000 x 300,000) in color modes including RGB, CMYK, Lab, Grayscale, Indexed, Duotone, and Multichannel, at 1, 8, 16, or 32 bits per channel. PSD files use a combination of RLE compression for individual layer data and store composite (flattened) preview images for quick display by applications that cannot parse the full layer structure. The format has become a de facto standard for professional creative workflows far beyond Photoshop itself — photographers, graphic designers, web developers, and video post-production artists exchange PSD files as the working format that preserves creative flexibility. One advantage is the non-destructive editing model: PSD preserves every layer, mask, adjustment, and effect as independently editable elements, allowing creative decisions to be revised at any point without starting over. The format's role as the interchange standard for the creative industry provides another core strength — PSD files can be opened by Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, After Effects, Premiere Pro, as well as Affinity Photo, GIMP, Sketch, Figma, and Photopea, making it the lingua franca of visual design.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert PPSM to PSD?

PSD gives you access to Photoshop editing tools for your slide content. Retouch graphics, adjust layers, apply filters, or repurpose presentation visuals in design projects.

How do I open PSD files?

Adobe Photoshop is the native editor. Affinity Photo, GIMP, Krita, and Photopea (web-based) all open PSD files. Most modern design applications support at least basic PSD reading.

Does PSD keep my slide layers?

Converted slides arrive as flattened raster images in PSD format. For layer-by-layer editing, you would need to manually separate elements within Photoshop after conversion.

What happens to PPSM macros?

PSD is an image editing format with no macro support. All VBA code from the PPSM is completely removed — the output is a clean raster image.

Is the conversion free?

Yes — Convertio provides PPSM to PSD conversion at no cost. Premium plans offer larger file sizes and faster processing for professional use.

What color modes does the PSD output support?

The converted PSD uses RGB color mode with 8-bit depth per channel. This covers the full color gamut of typical PPSM presentation slides.
