Specialized Format Access

IPL is a niche imaging format that few converters support. Convertio bridges the gap between PPSM presentations and specialized sequential imaging tools.

Multi-Slide Sequencing

Each PPSM slide converts into a sequential IPL frame, preserving the presentation order. Process an entire deck as an ordered image sequence in one operation.

Cloud Infrastructure

All rendering and format encoding runs on Convertio servers. No specialized imaging software needed locally — just upload from any browser and download IPL output.

About formats

PPSM (PowerPoint Slideshow with Macros) is a macro-enabled slideshow format in Microsoft PowerPoint, introduced with Office 2007 as part of the Office Open XML family. PPSM combines the auto-play slideshow behavior of PPSX with the VBA macro capabilities of PPTM — opening a PPSM file launches it directly into full-screen presentation mode while allowing embedded macro code to execute during the slideshow. The format is structurally a ZIP archive containing the same XML slide parts as other OOXML presentation formats, plus a vbaProject.bin stream housing the VBA project. This combination is particularly valuable for interactive presentations: macro-driven slideshows can respond to user input, navigate non-linearly between sections, query external databases, update content in real time, and log audience responses during training or assessment sessions. One advantage is interactive presentation capability — PPSM enables quiz-style presentations where clicking answer buttons triggers immediate scoring feedback, branching paths, or data recording, all invisible to the audience. The macro-enabled slideshow format also supports self-contained automation: a PPSM file can run initialization routines on launch, configure the display environment, and clean up resources on exit without any manual intervention. As with all macro-enabled Office Open XML formats, the distinct .ppsm extension helps administrators enforce security policies that differentiate between trusted macro content and standard presentations. PPSM is supported exclusively in Microsoft PowerPoint desktop editions.

IPL (IPLab) is a scientific image format developed by Scanalytics (later acquired by BD Biosciences) for their IPLab scientific image analysis software, first released around 1988. The format was designed to store microscopy and scientific imaging data with the precision and metadata needed for quantitative analysis in biological and biomedical research. IPL files support multiple data types including 8-bit and 16-bit unsigned integers, 16-bit signed integers, and 32-bit floating-point pixel values, accommodating the wide dynamic ranges produced by fluorescence microscopes, CCD cameras, and other scientific imaging instruments. The format handles multi-dimensional datasets including Z-stacks (focal series through a specimen), time-lapse sequences, and multi-channel fluorescence acquisitions where each channel captures emission from a different fluorescent probe. IPL files include a header with image dimensions, data type, number of planes, spatial calibration (pixels-to-micrometers conversion), and acquisition metadata from the microscope system. One advantage is quantitative integrity: unlike photographic formats that apply gamma correction, compression, or color space transforms, IPL preserves the raw linear intensity values from the detector, ensuring that measurements of fluorescence intensity, optical density, or particle counts performed on the image data correspond directly to the physical quantities being measured. The format's role in the microscopy community is another practical consideration: IPLab was widely used in cell biology, neuroscience, and pathology labs throughout the 1990s and 2000s, and archived IPL datasets from published research remain scientifically valuable. IPL files can be read by ImageJ/FIJI, Bio-Formats, and ImageMagick.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert PPSM to IPL?

IPL format is used by specialized image processing and sequencing applications. Converting slides to IPL prepares visual data for tools that require this particular input format.

What opens IPL?

IPL files are handled by dedicated image sequence viewers and certain scientific imaging platforms. ImageMagick can also read and process IPL format data.

What is IPL format?

IPL (IPL Image Sequence) is a raster format designed for storing sequential image frames. It is used in specialized imaging contexts where frame-ordered data is required.

Do PPSM macros appear in IPL output?

No — IPL stores only pixel data in a sequential frame structure. All VBA macros and embedded scripts from the PPSM are fully eliminated.

Is this free?

Yes — Convertio provides free PPSM to IPL conversion. Premium plans expand volume and file size limits for intensive processing tasks.

Can IPL store multiple slides as frames?

IPL is designed for image sequences, making it conceptually suited for multi-slide content where each slide becomes a sequential frame in the output.
