About formats

PPS (PowerPoint Slideshow) is a binary presentation format from Microsoft that functions identically to PPT with one behavioral difference: double-clicking a PPS file launches it directly in slideshow (full-screen) mode rather than opening the editing interface. The format uses the same OLE2 compound document structure as PPT, storing slides, text, images, animations, transitions, speaker notes, and embedded objects in binary streams. PPS files are typically produced by saving a finished PPT presentation in slideshow format, signaling that the content is intended for viewing rather than editing — though the file can still be opened for editing through PowerPoint's File menu. The format gained widespread use in corporate environments for distributing ready-to-present slide decks, training materials, kiosk displays, and self-running presentations. One advantage is presentation-ready behavior — recipients can launch a PPS file and immediately begin presenting without navigating editing tools, reducing the chance of accidentally modifying content or revealing speaker notes. The auto-play capability is another strength for unattended scenarios: combined with automatic timing and looping features, PPS files power information kiosks, digital signage, and lobby displays that run continuously without operator interaction. While the newer PPSX format has superseded PPS for current workflows, the binary slideshow format remains encountered in archived corporate materials and legacy presentation libraries.

XWD (X Window Dump) is a screen capture image format defined as part of the X Window System by the MIT X Consortium, dating to approximately 1987. The xwd command-line utility captures the contents of an X window or the entire screen and saves it as an XWD file — functionally equivalent to a screenshot utility but predating the concept by years. XWD files contain a detailed header specifying the X server's visual type, bit depth, byte order, bitmap unit and padding, the window's dimensions, border width, and color map information, followed by the raw pixel data exactly as represented in the X server's framebuffer. This means XWD files faithfully capture the exact pixel representation used by the display hardware — including server-specific byte ordering, padding, and color organization — making them primarily useful on the system where they were captured or on systems with compatible display configurations. The header also stores the window name string and the full color map entries for indexed-color visuals. XWD supports all X11 visual types: StaticGray, GrayScale, StaticColor, PseudoColor, TrueColor, and DirectColor, at any bit depth supported by the X server. One advantage is exact framebuffer fidelity: XWD captures the window's pixel data in its native format without any color space conversion or compression, making it the definitive record of what the X server was actually displaying. The format's integration with the X11 command-line toolkit provides another practical benefit — xwd can capture specific windows by ID or name, be triggered remotely via SSH, and piped directly to format converters. XWD files are handled by ImageMagick, GIMP, xwud (the viewer companion to xwd), and xv.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert PPS to XWD?

XWD is the native screenshot format for X Windows systems. Converting PPS slides to XWD creates images that integrate seamlessly with Unix/Linux display and documentation tools.

What opens XWD files?

The xwud utility on X11 systems displays XWD files directly. GIMP, ImageMagick, and most Linux image viewers also handle XWD without plugins.

Does XWD support color images?

Yes — XWD captures full-color window content including 24-bit true color. Your PPS slides will retain their original color fidelity.

Are XWD files large?

XWD stores uncompressed pixel data by default, so files can be larger than compressed alternatives. The tradeoff is perfect pixel-level accuracy.

Is PPS to XWD conversion free?

Yes, standard conversions are free. Premium plans support batch operations and oversized presentations.

Can XWD files be converted to PNG or JPEG later?

Absolutely. XWD can be converted to any common image format via Convertio or standard Unix tools like ImageMagick whenever broader compatibility is needed.
