Visualization Pipeline

XV integrates with the Khoros ecosystem for scientific imaging. PPS slides converted to XV feed directly into analysis and visualization workflows.

Runs in the Cloud

All processing happens on Convertio servers. Your computer handles nothing — just upload the PPS file and collect the XV output.

Platform Independent

Use the converter on any device with a web browser. No Khoros software, PowerPoint installation, or particular operating system required.

About formats

PPS (PowerPoint Slideshow) is a binary presentation format from Microsoft that functions identically to PPT with one behavioral difference: double-clicking a PPS file launches it directly in slideshow (full-screen) mode rather than opening the editing interface. The format uses the same OLE2 compound document structure as PPT, storing slides, text, images, animations, transitions, speaker notes, and embedded objects in binary streams. PPS files are typically produced by saving a finished PPT presentation in slideshow format, signaling that the content is intended for viewing rather than editing — though the file can still be opened for editing through PowerPoint's File menu. The format gained widespread use in corporate environments for distributing ready-to-present slide decks, training materials, kiosk displays, and self-running presentations. One advantage is presentation-ready behavior — recipients can launch a PPS file and immediately begin presenting without navigating editing tools, reducing the chance of accidentally modifying content or revealing speaker notes. The auto-play capability is another strength for unattended scenarios: combined with automatic timing and looping features, PPS files power information kiosks, digital signage, and lobby displays that run continuously without operator interaction. While the newer PPSX format has superseded PPS for current workflows, the binary slideshow format remains encountered in archived corporate materials and legacy presentation libraries.

XV is an alternate file extension for the VIFF (Visualization Image File Format) developed by Khoral Research as part of the Khoros scientific image processing environment, which originated at the University of New Mexico around 1990. The .xv extension and the .viff extension refer to the same underlying format — a container with a 1024-byte header encoding image dimensions, data type (from single-bit to double-precision float and complex numbers), color space, band count, and optional spatial location metadata, followed by color map data and pixel values. The XV extension became common on systems where Khoros was installed alongside other X Window System tools, and in some research communities .xv was preferred over .viff as a shorter alternative. Khoros itself was a pioneering visual programming system where scientists assembled image processing pipelines by wiring together processing nodes in a graphical canvas — an approach that predated and influenced similar environments in MATLAB, LabVIEW, and commercial remote sensing packages. One advantage of the VIFF/XV format is its ability to store data at scientific precision levels — floating-point and complex number pixel values preserve measurement accuracy that would be lost in photographic formats limited to 8-bit or 16-bit integers, making it valuable for spectral analysis, computational physics output, and satellite imagery. The multi-band architecture provides another strength, allowing a single file to hold dozens of spectral channels from multispectral or hyperspectral sensors without splitting data across multiple files. XV files are supported by ImageMagick and can be converted to modern image formats for visualization or publication.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert PPS to XV?

XV is a Khoros visualization format variant suited for scientific and analytical imaging workflows. It allows PPS slide data to be loaded into Khoros tools for further processing.

What software opens XV files?

The Khoros/VisiQuest suite, ImageMagick, and GIMP handle XV files. Some research-oriented visualization platforms also import this format.

Is XV different from VIFF?

XV is closely related to VIFF — both originate from the Khoros ecosystem. XV is a variant with slightly different internal conventions, but both serve visualization purposes.

Does conversion preserve slide colors?

Yes — XV supports multi-channel color data, so your PPS slides retain their visual appearance through the conversion process.

Is the conversion free?

Standard PPS to XV conversions are free on Convertio. Premium plans handle larger files and batch operations.

Can I convert XV to other image formats afterward?

Yes. XV files can be converted to PNG, JPEG, BMP, or other common formats anytime you need broader software compatibility.
