About formats

SFW is a proprietary image format created by Seattle FilmWorks (later PhotoWorks) for their Pictures on Disk mail-order photo service, active primarily from 1994 through the early 2000s. Customers who sent film to Seattle FilmWorks for developing could opt to receive their photos back on 3.5-inch floppy disks in addition to (or instead of) traditional prints. SFW files contained the scanned photographs in a JPEG-based encoding wrapped in a custom header, designed to be viewed through Seattle FilmWorks' proprietary desktop software. The service was notably popular in the mid-1990s, offering one of the most accessible ways for ordinary consumers to obtain digital versions of their film photographs before consumer scanners and digital cameras became affordable. SFW files typically contained modest-resolution scans appropriate for screen viewing and small prints — sufficient quality for the 640x480 and 800x600 monitor resolutions common at the time. One advantage of SFW files is their role as historical artifacts: for many families, SFW disks represent the only digital copies of film-era photographs from the 1990s, preserved on media that predates widespread home scanning and digital photography. The underlying JPEG data ensures reasonable image quality despite the proprietary wrapper. Extracting images from SFW files is straightforward: tools like XnView, ImageMagick, and specialized SFW-to-JPEG converters can strip the proprietary header and save the standard JPEG data, making these nostalgic files accessible on any modern device.

TGA (Truevision Graphics Adapter, also known as TARGA) is a raster image format created by Truevision in 1984 for their line of display adapter cards designed for IBM PC compatibles. The format stores pixel data in a straightforward structure: an 18-byte header specifying dimensions, color depth, and image descriptor flags, optional color map data, and the pixel array in either uncompressed or RLE-compressed form. TGA supports indexed color (8-bit with palette), true color (15-bit, 16-bit, 24-bit), and true color with alpha channel (32-bit), and was one of the first PC image formats to include per-pixel alpha transparency. The format became a staple of the professional graphics industry, widely adopted by video editing suites, 3D rendering software, and game development pipelines throughout the 1990s and 2000s. One advantage is native alpha channel support — TGA was one of the earliest formats offering full 8-bit alpha transparency per pixel, making it the standard output format for 3D renderers and compositing software where layered transparency is essential. The simple, well-documented structure is another strength: TGA files are quick to parse and write, with no complex metadata or container overhead, valued in real-time applications and game engines where loading speed matters. While PNG has largely replaced TGA for general use, the format persists in game development, texture pipelines, and 3D rendering workflows where its simplicity and alpha support remain advantageous.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert SFW to TGA?

SFW photos require viewer software that no longer ships. Converting to TGA ensures those memories remain viewable and shareable.

What programs can open TGA?

Photoshop, GIMP, IrfanView, XnView, and Blender open TGA files. This format remains popular in game development and VFX work.

Does SFW to TGA preserve quality?

The conversion keeps your image data intact — TGA does not introduce compression artifacts, ensuring the output matches the original closely.

Is SFW to TGA conversion fast?

Most SFW images convert to TGA within seconds. The exact time depends on the resolution and complexity of the source, but it is typically quick.

Can I convert multiple SFW images at once?

Yes — upload multiple SFW files in one session and convert them all to TGA simultaneously. Batch processing saves time on repetitive tasks.
