Lossless with Alpha

TGA preserves full quality and alpha transparency from your PSD — the preferred source texture format for game artists.

Game Dev Standard

TGA is widely used in game studios for texture authoring. Your PSD artwork enters the game asset pipeline seamlessly.

Cloud Processing

PSD flattening and TGA encoding run on remote servers — no Photoshop needed for the conversion.

About formats

PSD (Photoshop Document) is the native file format of Adobe Photoshop, the industry-standard raster image editor first released on February 19, 1990. PSD files preserve the complete editing state of a Photoshop project: all layers (raster, text, adjustment, shape, and smart object layers) with their positions, blending modes, opacity, and layer effects; layer masks and vector masks; alpha channels; spot color channels; paths; guides; slices; and the full undo history. The format supports images up to 30,000 x 30,000 pixels (PSB, the large document format, extends this to 300,000 x 300,000) in color modes including RGB, CMYK, Lab, Grayscale, Indexed, Duotone, and Multichannel, at 1, 8, 16, or 32 bits per channel. PSD files use a combination of RLE compression for individual layer data and store composite (flattened) preview images for quick display by applications that cannot parse the full layer structure. The format has become a de facto standard for professional creative workflows far beyond Photoshop itself — photographers, graphic designers, web developers, and video post-production artists exchange PSD files as the working format that preserves creative flexibility. One advantage is the non-destructive editing model: PSD preserves every layer, mask, adjustment, and effect as independently editable elements, allowing creative decisions to be revised at any point without starting over. The format's role as the interchange standard for the creative industry provides another core strength — PSD files can be opened by Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, After Effects, Premiere Pro, as well as Affinity Photo, GIMP, Sketch, Figma, and Photopea, making it the lingua franca of visual design.

TGA (Truevision Graphics Adapter, also known as TARGA) is a raster image format created by Truevision in 1984 for their line of display adapter cards designed for IBM PC compatibles. The format stores pixel data in a straightforward structure: an 18-byte header specifying dimensions, color depth, and image descriptor flags, optional color map data, and the pixel array in either uncompressed or RLE-compressed form. TGA supports indexed color (8-bit with palette), true color (15-bit, 16-bit, 24-bit), and true color with alpha channel (32-bit), and was one of the first PC image formats to include per-pixel alpha transparency. The format became a staple of the professional graphics industry, widely adopted by video editing suites, 3D rendering software, and game development pipelines throughout the 1990s and 2000s. One advantage is native alpha channel support — TGA was one of the earliest formats offering full 8-bit alpha transparency per pixel, making it the standard output format for 3D renderers and compositing software where layered transparency is essential. The simple, well-documented structure is another strength: TGA files are quick to parse and write, with no complex metadata or container overhead, valued in real-time applications and game engines where loading speed matters. While PNG has largely replaced TGA for general use, the format persists in game development, texture pipelines, and 3D rendering workflows where its simplicity and alpha support remain advantageous.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert PSD to TGA?

TGA is a game development staple with alpha channel support. Converting PSD to TGA creates lossless textures for Unity, Unreal, and VFX software.

What opens TGA files?

Adobe Photoshop, GIMP, IrfanView, XnView, Unity, Unreal Engine, and most video editing and 3D applications.

Does TGA keep transparency?

Yes — TGA supports full alpha channels. Transparent areas from your PSD are preserved in the TGA output.

Is TGA better than DDS for textures?

TGA is uncompressed and higher quality as source art. DDS is GPU-compressed for runtime. Many artists work in TGA and export DDS.

Is PSD to TGA conversion free?

Standard conversions are free. Premium plans handle larger PSD files and batch processing.
