About formats

RB is the native ebook format of the Rocket eBook, one of the first commercially available dedicated e-reading devices, developed by NuvoMedia and released in October 1998. Founded by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning — who later co-founded Tesla Motors — NuvoMedia designed the Rocket eBook as a handheld device with a reflective LCD screen, capable of storing approximately ten books in its internal memory. The RB format packages HTML-based content along with embedded images, metadata, and a table of contents into a single binary container optimized for the device's limited hardware. Content was purchased and downloaded through NuvoMedia's RocketLibrarian desktop software. A notable advantage of the format was its early support for bookmarking, annotation, dictionary lookups, and adjustable font sizing — features now standard on modern e-readers but revolutionary in the late 1990s. The Rocket eBook demonstrated viable commercial demand for dedicated reading devices, paving the way for subsequent platforms from Sony, Amazon, and others. NuvoMedia was acquired by Gemstar-TV Guide International in 2000, which discontinued the device line in 2003. While RB files are largely a historical curiosity today, they can be converted to modern formats using ebook management tools, and the format remains significant as a pioneering chapter in the evolution of digital reading.

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's branded implementation of the HEIF (High Efficiency Image File Format) standard that uses HEVC (H.265) as its image compression codec. Apple adopted HEIC as the default photo format on iPhones and iPads starting with iOS 11 in September 2017, replacing JPEG for newly captured images. HEIC files store photographs compressed with the intra-frame coding mode of the HEVC video codec, which applies sophisticated prediction, transform, and entropy coding techniques that achieve roughly 50% better compression than JPEG at equivalent visual quality. The ISOBMFF (ISO Base Media File Format) container supports multiple images in a single file, enabling Live Photos (a still plus a short video clip), burst sequences, depth maps from dual-camera systems, and HDR gain maps that allow compatible displays to render extended dynamic range. HEIC also stores alpha channels, auxiliary images for computational photography features (portrait mode depth data, semantic segmentation masks), and comprehensive EXIF/XMP metadata. One advantage is storage efficiency: iPhones shooting HEIC use roughly half the storage of equivalent JPEG captures with no visible quality loss, a significant benefit on devices where storage is finite and photos accumulate rapidly. The format's integration with Apple's ecosystem is another key strength — HEIC files are natively supported across macOS, iOS, iPadOS, and iCloud Photos, and automatic JPEG transcoding during file sharing ensures compatibility when sending photos to non-Apple devices. HEIC can also be opened by Windows 10/11 (with codec), GIMP, ImageMagick, and Adobe Lightroom.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert RB to HEIC?

The Rocket eBook format is obsolete since 1998. HEIC captures ebook pages as high-quality, space-efficient images native to Apple devices.

What opens HEIC files?

Apple Photos, iOS/macOS Preview, Windows 10+ (with HEIF extension), Google Photos, and GIMP all support HEIC images.

Is HEIC better than JPEG?

HEIC delivers similar visual quality at roughly half the file size of JPEG, thanks to modern HEVC compression technology.

Does conversion happen in the cloud?

Yes — Convertio servers handle all processing. Your local device does not need any special software or computing power.

Is there a fee?

RB to HEIC conversion is free on Convertio. Premium plans provide higher file limits and batch conversion capabilities.
