About formats

PSD (Photoshop Document) is the native file format of Adobe Photoshop, the industry-standard raster image editor first released on February 19, 1990. PSD files preserve the complete editing state of a Photoshop project: all layers (raster, text, adjustment, shape, and smart object layers) with their positions, blending modes, opacity, and layer effects; layer masks and vector masks; alpha channels; spot color channels; paths; guides; slices; and the full undo history. The format supports images up to 30,000 x 30,000 pixels (PSB, the large document format, extends this to 300,000 x 300,000) in color modes including RGB, CMYK, Lab, Grayscale, Indexed, Duotone, and Multichannel, at 1, 8, 16, or 32 bits per channel. PSD files use a combination of RLE compression for individual layer data and store composite (flattened) preview images for quick display by applications that cannot parse the full layer structure. The format has become a de facto standard for professional creative workflows far beyond Photoshop itself — photographers, graphic designers, web developers, and video post-production artists exchange PSD files as the working format that preserves creative flexibility. One advantage is the non-destructive editing model: PSD preserves every layer, mask, adjustment, and effect as independently editable elements, allowing creative decisions to be revised at any point without starting over. The format's role as the interchange standard for the creative industry provides another core strength — PSD files can be opened by Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, After Effects, Premiere Pro, as well as Affinity Photo, GIMP, Sketch, Figma, and Photopea, making it the lingua franca of visual design.

PDB (Palm Database) is a generic database container format created by Palm, Inc. for the Palm OS platform, first appearing with the original PalmPilot in March 1996. In the ebook context, PDB files most commonly use the PalmDOC or Plucker encoding to store readable text with basic formatting. The format consists of a 78-byte header identifying the database name, creation date, and record count, followed by a record index table and the data records themselves. PalmDOC-encoded PDB files use a simple LZ77-based compression scheme to pack plain text efficiently, while Plucker extends this with HTML rendering, image support, and hyperlink navigation. PDB ebooks powered a thriving mobile reading ecosystem years before dedicated e-readers existed — millions of Palm OS users carried entire libraries on devices like the Palm V, Tungsten, and Treo handhelds. A primary advantage is extreme simplicity: the flat record structure and minimal overhead mean PDB files parse instantly even on severely constrained hardware with limited memory and processing power. The open, well-documented structure is another strength, having spawned numerous reader applications across Palm OS, Windows, and later mobile platforms. Though the Palm platform is long discontinued, PDB ebooks remain accessible through conversion tools and readers like Calibre, and the format holds historical significance as one of the earliest practical mobile ebook solutions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert PSD to PDB?

PDB is the Palm OS database image format — converting your Photoshop design to PDB lets you transfer artwork to classic Palm handhelds or use it in e-book workflows.

What software reads PDB files?

Palm OS devices read PDB natively. On desktop, Calibre and iSilo handle PDB for e-book management, while legacy Palm Desktop software also opens these files.

Is PDB still relevant today?

PDB remains useful in two areas — accessing content on vintage Palm OS hardware and converting images for e-book pipelines through tools like Calibre.

Will my PSD design be resized for PDB?

Yes — the image gets adapted to fit PDB constraints optimized for handheld displays, so dimensions and color depth may be adjusted during conversion.

Is PSD to PDB conversion free?

Yes — Convertio handles standard PSD to PDB conversions at no cost. Premium plans provide batch processing for users working with multiple image files.
