About formats

PSD (Photoshop Document) is the native file format of Adobe Photoshop, the industry-standard raster image editor first released on February 19, 1990. PSD files preserve the complete editing state of a Photoshop project: all layers (raster, text, adjustment, shape, and smart object layers) with their positions, blending modes, opacity, and layer effects; layer masks and vector masks; alpha channels; spot color channels; paths; guides; slices; and the full undo history. The format supports images up to 30,000 x 30,000 pixels (PSB, the large document format, extends this to 300,000 x 300,000) in color modes including RGB, CMYK, Lab, Grayscale, Indexed, Duotone, and Multichannel, at 1, 8, 16, or 32 bits per channel. PSD files use a combination of RLE compression for individual layer data and store composite (flattened) preview images for quick display by applications that cannot parse the full layer structure. The format has become a de facto standard for professional creative workflows far beyond Photoshop itself — photographers, graphic designers, web developers, and video post-production artists exchange PSD files as the working format that preserves creative flexibility. One advantage is the non-destructive editing model: PSD preserves every layer, mask, adjustment, and effect as independently editable elements, allowing creative decisions to be revised at any point without starting over. The format's role as the interchange standard for the creative industry provides another core strength — PSD files can be opened by Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, After Effects, Premiere Pro, as well as Affinity Photo, GIMP, Sketch, Figma, and Photopea, making it the lingua franca of visual design.

PICT is a metafile graphics format created by Apple Computer as the native graphics format for the Macintosh, debuting alongside the original Mac in January 1984 and remaining central to Mac OS graphics until the transition to Mac OS X. PICT files record a series of QuickDraw operation codes (opcodes) that reproduce the image when replayed through the QuickDraw graphics engine: operations for drawing lines, arcs, rectangles, rounded rectangles, ovals, polygons, regions, text strings, and pixel maps (bitmaps). This opcode-based approach means PICT files are not simply pixel grids but rather programmatic descriptions of how to draw the image, combining resolution-independent vector elements with pixel data in a unified stream. The PICT 2 revision, introduced with the Macintosh II and Color QuickDraw in 1987, extended the format to handle 24-bit color, multiple pixel depths, extended color spaces, and embedded JPEG and PackBits compressed data. PICT was integral to the Macintosh user experience: system clipboard operations (Copy/Paste), screen capture, printing, and inter-application data exchange all used PICT as the common visual representation. One advantage is historical comprehensiveness: PICT files from the classic Mac era capture both the visual output and the drawing methodology of Mac applications, preserving not just the image but the QuickDraw operations that produced it — valuable for understanding the visual computing paradigm of early Macintosh software. The format's extensive use in desktop publishing during the DTP revolution of the late 1980s provides another dimension of historical importance. PICT files are readable by macOS Preview, ImageMagick, XnView, LibreOffice, and GraphicConverter.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert PSD to PICT?

PICT is useful when you need your Photoshop design in a specific format for specialized tools, legacy systems, or particular workflows.

What opens PICT files?

legacy macOS, LibreOffice, and ImageMagick handle the PICT format for viewing and processing.

Does conversion flatten PSD layers?

Yes — PICT is a flat format. All Photoshop layers merge into a single image during the conversion process.

Is the output quality good?

Your PSD artwork is rendered at high quality before encoding into the PICT format for maximum fidelity.

Is PSD to PICT conversion free?

Standard conversions are free on Convertio. Premium plans offer batch processing and faster speeds.
